Getting better

Blog by : wondlof
0

So i've not made a post for a while. Mainly due to this new blog software and i've been going through a horrible spell. I withdrew some $ from FTP and made a deposit on Ladbrokes, which is a european site, with supposedly soft games. As you can see below i've ran ~ 8 buy-ins below EV over 5k hands, so it's not exactly gone well results wise. I've found that the games aren't actually that fishy either, so have been playing more on FTP recently. I think that once you lose alot at a site, your confidence kinda goes and it's hard to play your A+ game. Anyhow, i've been satisifed with my play but admitadly ive not played my best at all times. If you can't read number below i've basically lost $564 over 5k hands, but my $EV has been + $1100.

I also ran pretty bad on FTP and Crypto the last couple of weeks and my total downswing was probably 12 buy-ins.

This weekend i've had good results and have won ~ 4 buy-ins.

Look at how much of a station I am (btw how cool is my Ladbrokes SN?!):

The WSOPE is going on in London at the moment so i'm gonna head over to the Empire to watch some of it. Last year I played some cash games abit there also which wsa fun. Looking forward to it. Last year I watched Kenny Tran, Antonius, Negreanu and Johnny Chan which was awesome. I see David Benefield is currently chip leader. I love his vidoes and he seems to need chearing up from reading his blog. Taking this down may go some way towards doing that :) Go Raptor.

Video at 6 max 200nl FTP

Blog by : wondlof
0

I just recorded a session for someone that has invited session reviews.

The session was cool with loads of interesting spots, particularly in the later stages of the video. As I was playing just 4 tables, I played a bit more LAGy that I have been the past few days. I played 21/18 and the session went well, results wise. I spewed in a couple spots though.

Here's a link to download the session.

It's 4 tables of 200nl on FT.

Would love to hear any feedback :)

Just had a sick couple of sessions. Cant complain about running poorly anymore :) Just what the Dr ordered. I've been playing more tables, and so have been playing nittier as a result. Think that this increases my hourly rate.

Runner, runner to crank his flopped straight.! He was playing like 20/10 I made a loose pf call against him, but wtf was he raising 85 UTG. Just shows you cant read too much into pre-flop stats, as if someone raises 10% of hands, doesnt mean he raises the top 10% of his hands.

Not sure what the best line on the turn is here. We are pretty deep, but in a re-raised pot im not folding and have the nut flush draw as back up. Very suprised he folded turn for not much more.

Could do better

Blog by : wondlof

Dont want to sound like a broken record, as all poker players say the same thing but i've had a pretty disappointing time at the tables for the last few weeks. I feel liek i've ran pretty bad. I've had some horrendous sessions. Buoyed by my very good winrate at 100nl HU, I played at 」100 NL HU (equivalent to $200). My opponent was shocking, one of the worst opponents i've played this month. Needless to say I dropped $1k (5 buy-ins). :(

This shows how bad he was, and one of the few pots I won:

This hand may be the sickest of the month

Opponent had been 3 betting me light, so I made a loose call pre-flop to make a move post flop. On the flop I have a double gutter, needing a 7 or J to give me a straight, so raise, meaning he has to fold a large % of his range (particularly given how light he has been 3 betting). He decides to call with A high! On the turn I make gin, and he decides to make a shove with a gutshot and no fold equity. The K binks.

This one was pretty special too. It was a re-raised pot - he called flop with a gutshot and then jammed turn with 0% fold equity. I made small flop / turn bet to induce but common.

Moan over, I have had some winners to put me in the green.

I loved this overbet shove against an awful aggro player in this spot, who id been battling with.

I also played HU vs MasterLJ for a short time. I love his HU videos and have learnt an awful lot from them, so thought that it would be a real challenge to play him, and hoped it would be in a video. Unfortunately, we only played for around 15 mins before he quit.

Only real pot of any size we played was one where he called a 3 bet by me with 77 and turned a set vs my QQ. Board was K high so i got away cheap :) I hope to see it in a video soon.

Back from Vegas

Blog by : wondlof
0

I got back from Vegas a few days ago.

I had a great time; it was really good to have a sustained period away from work. We flew Virgin from Gatwick and stayed at the Excalibur for our 24 days there. A group of 4 of us went from the UK.

I have to say it was pretty disappointing on the poker front. Before I went as I was busy with work I hadn't managed to transfer all the $ that I wanted from online accounts to my bank account. The sums of money were still on Neteller. No problem I thought, i'd just do that in Vegas. However, when I tried to log onto Neteller in Vegas my account was automatically closed due to restrictions imposed on US citizens. This meant that I didnt have access to the $ that I'd wanted and so I wasnt able to hop right into the 2-5 games like I wanted. I had to play $1-$2 NL at 25 hands an hour .... so boring. During the trip we mainly played at MGM and Ceasers and a bit at Excalibur.

I ran pretty shitty. On day 2 and 3 I went 20 hours without winning a showdown, and similarly on the last 2 days of the trip. I won basically no big pots when playing 2-4 NL at Mandalay Bay and 2-5 NL at MGM. II played the Ceasers $340 deep stack twice but didnt cash. In the live cash games I dont think that I was quite aggressive enough, but hey no one ever folds to me ever, and so I felt that I was nut--peddling and just set mining most the time, which obv heavily relies on not being card dead. I finished the trip in profit but due to the standard of play and how I ran, i did much worse that I would have expected.

I was suprised at how alot of players were so passive pre-flop with alot of their range. There was very little 3 betting and people played AK very passively. One hand pretty much summed up my trip. I limped with JQ after 2 limpers in MP. Button limps behind. Flop Jc Jh 9c. I bet, button calls. Turn 6c, I bet, button calls. River Qh. I decide that after he calls turn he must have strong hand ie trips / flush and that if I bet he'd probably just call with these. but if I check he'd very likely bet these for value. Also if he happened to have QT id give him chance to bluff missed draw. I check-raise and we get it in. He shows QQ, so he'd limped behind 3 limpers on button and called 2 streets in a 4 way pot on a scary board on which QQ is never good and then hit his 1 outer, that is the only card in deck on river that makes me put significantly more money in the pot!

Funilly enough, I did very well online during the trip. The trip made me realise that online is where I want to focus. Live poker is very boring and relies so much on variance. I mean in my 3.5 weeks there I probably played around 150 hours, which would have been like less than 4,000 hands, which would basically give no indication of whether or not I was good enough to beat the games.

Here's my online stats for the trip:

Oh well, back to work and back to online :)

Heading to Vegas

My good form has continued this week. I've played maybe only 5 or 6 hours but I've run really well.

Bit of a donaion - always raising from BB after SB limps makes them do stupid things after a while.

----- SUMMARY -----

This is probably my worst played hand of the week. I take a line like I've never taken before. I don't re-raise pre-flop, which is very, very rare and i just check-call down (guy is very nitty pre-flop though). On the river my hand looks super weak after the line i've taken and his river bet just doesnt seem like a value bet, like it wants to be called, and i've played my hand like a draw that has missed. Oh well.

With Vegas in mind, where I think I will play a few of the $200 / $300 tournaments at Caesers and the Venetian (deep stacked), I played a live 」50 freezout tournament at Big Slick in Croydon. 10k starting chips, 20 min levels.

My friend Dan, who used to make videos for Cardrunners (fruitypro) turned up and was sat to my direct left. He;s just got back from Vegas so was nice to catch up and get a few Vegas tips.

First real pot I played was at 50-100 level. I raised 1 limper from CO w Ac9c to 400.

Very loose button and BB call, limper folds.

Flop Kd 3h 4d

BB checks I bet 800 into 1400, button calls, BB folds. I could tell that button didnt like his hand very much.

Turn As. I now value bet 1300 as I think he has a weak king.

River 8c

I make a small value bet of 1800, he calls, and shows Ad Jh. So anoying, as turn is 2 outer, only card that makes me lose a big-ish pot. This cut me down to ~ 7k.

Blinds soon went up to 100-200, 150-300 and I had to play snug as my stack didnt allow me to call / re-raise light.

Next big pot, I raise to 1200 at 200-400 level with 33 and the loose BB calls.

Flop 456 and he has a stack size that makes c/r'ing all in a common play on this ragy flop that I 'probably missed'. I check behind.

Turn 2 giving me the straight. He bets 1600 and has around 4k left. I consider shoving but decide there may be more value in just calling and letting him bluff river as on such scary board I dont exopect him to call with worse, but due to scary board he may well bluff shove river.

River is 3, givng me meaningless set and putting my hand is now the board. He has air and would probably have bluff shoved but we split, so another 2 outer.

Same player, very next hand, I raise w JQo, button calls, he calls from SB.

Flop Jh 5h 6d

Pot is 3600.

SB open shoves for 8k. I have 9k.

Button also looks interested. Wtf? I dont like my hand much, but he would never open shove with a set, and I very much doubt 2 pair, but he could well with KJ, or flush draw + overcard against which i dont have fantastic equity. Button also looks keen. Eventually I call. Button passes his Kh Qh. SB shows 69o and rivers a 9, leaving me crippled next hand with blinds increased to 300-600.

I muck J2o utg + 1. Next hand I ship in with A7o, and lose to AQ and AJ (we all made 2 pair). So I played 3 big pots and effectively lost to two 2 outers and a 5 outer.

I'm heading to Vegas on tuesday morning (17th June) until 9 July. I'm staying at the Excalibur and am sooo excited. I plan on having a couple sessions at 1-3 nl and then playing 2-5 nl if the games are as juicy as i've heard. I will also play a few tournaments at Caesers and teh Venetian.

Fingers crossed I run well!

Canny weekend

Blog by : wondlof

I was off work sick on friday and so played quite a bit. Won alot in the morning but then ran like shit in the afternnon to get stuck. Decent session in the evening, as I was too ill to go out like I usually do and i got back in the black for the day.

Here's my stats for friday and another example of me running well at 」 and shit at $. It's even at the same site and generally against the very same players.

I generally ran ballbags at $ by people calling re-raises and hitting sets etc.

On Saturday, I was still felling rough and so wasnt up for a night out, so went to play a 」50 freezout at a poker club near me (Big Slick). This was for live tourney practice, as im heading to Vegas on 17th June and will probably play some tourneys there. I wanted to get back in the right tourney mindset and think about adjustments from usual cash game strategy. Also the tournament had a decent structure - 10k starting chips, 25 min blind levels.

Early on 2 limpers at 25-50 level, - I raise to 250 from SB with black Aces, BB and both limpers call - so pot 1025.

Flop 6TT rainbow. I bet 600, BB calls, limpers fold.

Turn J - I check-call 800.

River goes check - check - he shows T8. Hmmm you got value there sir.

Another couple of hands I try to punish limpers in position (usual cash game strategy) but fail when they call and hit flop / i miss, so lose a few more chips. Win a few back with a hero call with middle pair - calling 2 barrels from someone when his line didnt make sense.

Then blinds at 75-150 - last hand before break 2 limpers and SB limps - I raise to 1k w As9c and approx 7k stack. Part of this is thinking that people dont want to get involved in marginal hand just before break.

Both call, pot is 3.15k.

Flop comes Ac Ks 6s

I bet 1.7k, first limper folds, second calls.

Turn Jc

I check, opponent shoves for 6.4k, and he covers me.

I think wtf, you would never do that with set of 6s, and he'd shown willingness to raise AJ, AK type hands pre-flo and so limp-call line didnt fit. But, he'd also played one hand like a nit when he c/'d a paired flop with nut flush draw, lead turn after he hit but then check-deliberated called river. I thought that he has KJ, A6 enough here to make this a fold but something didnt feel right and he looked awkward - i guess i should have trusted my read. After I folded he showed 7s8s for the flush draw. As it was the break, dealer delt river and it was Js, so would have lost anyway.

After break i steal a few pots to stay afloat and then hand where same player from above limps from CO, SB limps and I check BB with Q 9

Flop: T J 4

SB shows no interest and checks, I lead for 400 into 600

CO calls

Turn 2

Pot is 1.4k and I have 5.8k

Not sure what the best play is here given my stack size? I check-call 900 and c/f on blank river.

At what's stack size does shoving turn become optimal? Stack size really changes the best line to take - this is quite important to be of aware of in tournaments where stack sizes are always changing; much more so than cash games where effective stack sizes are pretty static, and the pot:stack ratio is much higher. If my stack is smaller than i think shoving turn is best play, and in this spot i think that check-raising all in would be better than check-calling and he would effectively be crippled if he called and lost and lets remember he did only limp from CO and didnt raise this drawy flop when i bet.

Anyway down to 4.4k, I open shove with AQ at 200-400 blinds from button and get snap-called by SB (player with T8 from 1st hand of tournament ) with AK, which holds.

I hate tournaments, and now am not that eager to play them in Vegas like I was a few days ago.

Then this evening I played a short cash session online. I won 1 very big pot. Button vs SB, we got it in for 158bbs all-in pre-flop.

Also, the rakeback site that I use is doing a special reward thing this month for the top rake-earners. I'm currently in 3rd place in the othe rrooms category (ie not FT, Absolute, Cake, UB): But as i'm going away next tuesday, i'll probably stlip down the leaderboard :(

Here's the hands that I've played since last entry (17th may). It's gone okay - but i'm still incapable of winning in $! Lets hope that changes before I get to Vegas

I think that I've played pretty well on the whole, but could have played better at times. I've been playing some on Betfair too, where i've just set up an account - as I find the games on UK sites easier than Full-Tilt (where i've basically stopped plaing apart from HU NLH). You cant use PA Hud on it though, which I actually quite like, as I rarely pay any attention to it, and it discourages mult-tabling 2+2'ers / Cardrunners from playing on the site I guess. The software is very, very fast and is going to take some getting used to. It's not very user friendly IMO.

Got away with minimal damage from this hand - something didnt fee right about getting it in:

Another example of reg calling re-raise OOP with small pair - granted we were bit deeper but still leak IMO.

I'm pretty confident at the moment, and really feel as though my post-flop play has improved. I'm much more confident now playing a looser style ~ 21/18; whereas a couple months ago I was more like 19/16 style. I leave for Vegas on 17th June (a week on tuesday) and cannot wait.

Since the last entry I've been pretty busy and haven't got too many hands in. When I have played it's gone pretty rubbish.

I ran awful at $100nl, which is better than running awful at 」100 or $200nl I suppose.

Below are my NLH stats:

Here's me getting zero credit for a hand on Crypto once again; this time against a 30/18 aggro reg, who i've played over 2k hands with, so I get it in fairly light. Quite pleased that he saw my hand as this is the lightest i'd ever get it in with, but his perception of my range will be vastly aletred and a skewed one at that, so I can adjust and totally pawn him.

This hand was against someone who floats me alot, so I considered C/R'ing the flop, and then at the last moment, realised that I was suspicious of his small turn bet on this dry board as when he floats / takes it away on turn he usually bets bigger. Not sure about the river call, but think i have to call as my hand is pretty under-repped and he could well have 45.

As I usually do when I'm not feeling on top of my NLH game, I tend to play abit of Omaha. I'm still learning the game and really enjoying it. Feels far less of a grind when I play and I encounter new situations the whole time which I rarely do in NLH.

I've tried to play abit tighter and stay away from marginal spots, and have been doing great, but I still find myself in spots where I really dont know the best play ie raising river bets with middle set etc. When have top set and lead into for bet with size the stack of the pot remaining on a 3 flush turn hmmmm. Need to watch some more videos and be more certain of plays in sticky spots before I move up to $100 PLO. Still I've ran at 9.44ptb/100 over 6.k hands so far, hope it continues.

Boom

So I was in Birmingham last week again on training. This meant that I was able to play for approx 45 mins each evening before we went out, so managed to get quiet a few hands in over the week and then again over the long weekend (it was a bank holiday in the UK).

I had some good results:

This weekend I played at 」0.50 - 」1 again (equivalent to $1-$2) on the Crypto network. I've come to the realisation that the games on Crypto are much softer than those at 200nl on Full Tilt and so i've made the decision to make this my bread and butter game. With that in mind I've also made a deposit onto the Ladborkes site (another Euro site).

Here's some hands:

UTG ($103.19)
MP ($192.14)
Hero ($199)
SB ($46.82)
BB ($144)

Preflop: Hero is Button with 7, 4. SB posts a blind of $2.
1 fold, UTG calls $2, MP calls $2, Hero raises to $10, 1 fold, UTG folds, MP calls $8.

Flop: ($24) 5, A, 3(2 players)
MP checks, Hero bets $16, MP calls $16.

Turn: ($56) 3(2 players)
MP checks, Hero checks.

River: ($56) 6(2 players)
MP bets $56. Hero shoves.

Was shown 55 for a full-house, for some reason I cant find the HH on PT so have got it from a post I made on 2+2 about shoving the river.

I also made this big laydown, which I got quite a bit of flack from on 2+2. See this thread: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthread.php?t=195838

Given that I raised utg and that the SB is a very good 24/18 player I think that I prefer just calling pf, as we are 155bbs deep and 4 betting allows him to play perfectly vs my range ie fold TT-QQ, shove AA. I think that by 4 betting I miss out on post-flop value from TT-QQ. His 3 betting range, given my utg raise is 99 +, AQ, AK I think.

On the flop I am very suspicious of his flop. If I bet and am C/R AI wtf do I beat vs a good player this deep? He's certainly not doing that with JJ. I cant see him not c-betting with AQ in this spot. I think turn is then standard. When he bets river, after my turn call and his pf 3 bet I think his range is very narrow, like AQ, QQ, JJ, AA. But again, I really think that he just c-bets AQ, and so I find a fold. Everyone disagrees with me though :)

Other good news is that Vegas is fully booked now, flying Virgin direct from Gatwick on 17th June, staying at Excalibur til 9th July. Cannot wait, to be in Vegas during the WSOP. I'm hopefully gonna crush the cash games :) If anyone is having a CR get-together let me know, or if anyone recomends the best places for $1-3 or $2-$5 NL let me know.
