Guess it had to end at some point...

I ended up playing quite a bit last weekend and was off to a good start winning around $5k on Friday night / Saturday morning. That's when it all changed and my hot streak came to a bitter sweet end...
As of Saturday afternoon I was running $10k above expectation over 18k hands and after grinding through a further 3k hands on Saturday and Sunday I am now $2k below expectations. I had one long session on Sunday where I was playing various stakes from 400-5000NL. I was playing really well and getting my money in as a favorite most of the time but nonetheless ended the session down $5k despite my EV being a positive $6k, that's $11k below expectations!! To be fair, I always knew that my hot streak had to come to an end and I rather have it come to an end when I am playing well than vice versa as this way I limit my losses as I don't tend to tilt and feel good about myself. If I would have lost $5k and my EV would have been negative $1k I probably would not feel that great. The good thing is that I still ended the weekend up $2k, which is not a great hourly rate given the amount of hours I played but given how bad I ran I am more than happy with it.
Not sure if I will put in a session tonight as my fianc©e is already a bit annoyed that I played so much this weekend, but I just did not want to have a losing weekend and even played 30min before going to work today, making $5k in the process. I think I figured out the game plan of one of the regular 5,000NL players and will try to have some more match ups against him soon as he seems pretty weak for the stakes he is playing. Tonight I might decide to just spend time with my fianc©e and not open up any tables. Definitely not going to play on Tue or Wed as Champions League is on and I want to watch it as there are some awesome match ups.
I hope my luck turns around again in the coming days and GL at the tables to all of you!

Degenerate gambler = ME

Blog by : teubsch

Talking about enlightenment, I hope I finally take my own advice and stick with it. Just reading over my last post it became clear to me that I obviously know what to do but often get caught up in the poker moment and just go crazy because I hate losing so much and ending a day down I just no fun. That's exactly what happened on Wednesday night when I was playing a couple of 400 and 600NL tables while watching TV. I was down $2k or so relatively quickly as I played on autopilot and didn't focus. As I hate losing and it was already 1am, I moved up to $1kNL to regain my losses, which is obviously the worst possible thing to do. That backfired and soon I was down around $5k, which was 1/3 of my bankroll. Instead of quitting and getting some sleep, I moved up to $5k NL and basically put my whole bankroll on the line. At the beginning of the session I had $15k in my account which was now down to ~$10k. Played pretty well for the first couple of minutes at $5k and won $2k back but then got it all in on the flop with a straight and nut flush draw against TPTK and didn't get lucky on turn or river. Now I was down to $6k and thought about quitting and having to grind my way back up over weeks if not months. That thought did not last very long and back I was at the $5k table with literally my whole bankroll on the line. The guy I was playing was very tight and played something like 30/8 HU. I didn't play many hands against him but was all in 3 times in about 20 minutes of play:
Get it in as a 64% favorite but get sucked out on.

http://weaktight.com/534833
Luckily I won this coin flip as otherwise I could have said goodbye to my entire bankroll.
If you're not willing to risk it all, you don't want it bad enough. Here I certainly got rewarded as this is just a dream flop for me.
After this hand I was back up to $16k and ended the day with a profit of $1k but with ridiculous variance and lots of nerve wrecking. This is definitely not the way to becoming a good lasting poker player. Hence, I think I need to get my perspective and focus back and therefore will not play any poker until next week and even next week I will play very little as we are going to Paris for a long weekend for a friend's wedding and during the week I just don't have that much time.
I am really happy that I managed to rebuild my bankroll by running well these 20min at $5kNL but I also hope that I will never let myself get in such a situation again and be so plain and simple stupid. I just need to force myself to be much more disciplined with my bankroll as I really enjoy playing poker and don't want to be in a situation where I can't do it anymore because my bankroll has evaporated. This experience was definitely a lesson for me and I hope you guys are smarter than me and never find yourself in anything remotely similar.
Good luck at the tables and you will probably not hear from me for the next ten days!

Have to get back into focus and not move up to quickly

Blog by : teubsch

Although I managed to continue to win a little bit over the last couple of days it has come with great risks and I am not happy at all with my concentration level and focus. I get that sometimes that I lose focus when I am on a heater and feel like the level I am playing is not sufficiently incentivizing me to play my best. The result is that I drop a couple of buy-ins at 400NL or 600NL and then move up to 1k or even 2kNL to get it back. At these higher stakes I am super focused and up to now managed to win my losses from the lower stakes back pretty quickly. On the one hand this is good new as I really think I can be a winning 2kNL player once I have the appropriate bankroll, but on the other hand I don't like the fact that I am losing concentration so quickly at the lower levels. I will therefore challenge myself for the rest of November to only play 400 and 600NL for which I am now adequately bankrolled. I also have to start game selecting better again. I don't mind playing a tough opponent once in a while as that is the way to get better, but at the end of the day I want to win money and it is never easier than playing some donkey.
Besides poker things are going fine. Work has been a little slow and I don't get up in the morning feeling excited about having to go to work. This is not a function of the kind of work I am doing, as I like it a lot but has more to do with the fact that a great team is really important for me and currently that is not really the case as there is no real team spirit. Well, some people in the financial industry have the opinion that you will not find this anywhere as most people in finance are selfish and only care about themselves and therefore will not be great team player, but I haven't bought into that completely although I am getting more convinced day by day.
Last weekend I took it pretty easy and only went out on Saturday to see the new flat a good friend of mine moved in, and it is really nice and in a very cool neighborhood. We then headed to the pub for some dinner and drinks. Afterwards, he and a friend hit a club, but me and my fianc©e went back home to relax and watch some TV. I am still stuck on Prison Break but she kind of grew tired of it and rather wants to watch Grey's Anatomy which is not exactly my favorite. I am really looking forward to the new 24 which I think is coming out in the UK some time this month. Sunday we had to run some errands and in the evening we went to the house of my finacee's parents for dinner. Her brother and his wife just got back from NY where they went to the BBC election party which apparently was amazing. I am definitely happy that Obama won but with great expectation often also comes great disappointment. I think his first 100 days in office will be really important to show the public how suited he is to tackle the many problems the world is facing.

Got to stay focused and stick to game plan

Blog by : teubsch

As I have been running rather hot over the last 10 days or so, I decided to withdraw my initial deposit and continue playing with my winnings, which give me a more than adequate bankroll to play 400NL. I think this is something that people don't do enough and thereby expose themselves to too much risk when the downturn hits. I have a lot of friends who have gone on a winning spree, not withdrawn their initial deposit and then lost all (incl. initial deposit) when the downswing came and they were on monkey tilt. I think that one of the key differences between mediocre and top online pros is good BR management. If you follow Ivey's game plan, you will see that he uses a stop loss strategy and has the discipline to quit for a couple of hours after dropping a couple of buy-ins. This has such a huge positive impact on your game as you tend to tilt less easily. I used to be one of those guys who cranked through thousands of hands a day when I had a downturn in order to get myself out of it as quickly as possible. This has often led to an even more severe downswing as I was less concentrated and played way too long while tilting more in the process.
Last weekend was the perfect example as I was 3 tabling a guy and was down around 4 buy-ins. I took a break from poker, cooked up some nice food and after dinner got back into it. He had gone at this point but I played a different guy and won 6 buy-ins to end the day with a nice profit. I truly believe that this would never been possible if I had just continued to play without taking a breezer for an hour or so. It just helps you to get your perspective back and approach the game with a fresh mind. I hope I can stick to this way of looking at the game going forward as I know it would be optimal.
I wanted to take it slow this week as I had quite an exhausting weekend with not much sleep. Obviously this did not happen and I ended up playing quite a bit and continued to run hot. Although I ended up winning around $4k I am not quite happy with myself as I played a few session of $1kNL when I thought that it was sufficiently +EV. I ended up winning quite a bit at these higher stakes, but nonetheless I should not have done it as I am not adequately bankrolled for it yet (<25 buyins). Really have to stick to my game plan going forward and play 400NL for a bit longer and then move up to 600NL. Given my recent good streak I hope that I will be in a position to play 600NL starting next week J
Good luck at the tables!

Continue to run hot

Blog by : teubsch

The weekend has been great although I was a bit disappointed that there was no live online broadcast of the November Nine. I guess I have to watch it on ESPN on Tuesday as I cant stand listing to it on radiob. Looking forward to it and am really rooting for Craig as I played against him a couple of times on FTP and he seems like a decent guy. I think it will be a very tough and long final table.

I played lots of poker this weekend and continued to run hot. I played a a very long session last night after watching W in the cinema. The movie is pretty rubish as nothing really new comes to light about Bush and Oliver Stone is just playing on all the funny moments Bush had during it presidency. Definitely cannot recommend it, my fiancee even fell asleep during it. Next on my list is James Bond, I have heard different opinions about it. After coming back from the cinema I loaded up a couple of tables and played from 10pm till 6 in the morning which turned out to be great although it was a bit too long. I really like to play longer sessions against the same opponent and on Saturday I played around 1500 hands against the same opponent on 2 tables simultaneously and winning 4 buyins in the process. This way you can really get your reads right and adjust appropriately. I read him almost perfect and have a good grasp how he plays. I definitely think I have a big edge on him and since he is a regular I played him again today on 2 tables and got him on tilt pretty quickly (through my reads) ending the session up another 5 buy ins. I am not going to post hands today as it is almost 1am here in London and I have to hit the sack to be ready for work.

Overall I won another $4.5k this weekend and am up almost $10k since getting back into poker. This is a very good result given that I only got back into it 10 days ago and played aroun 7.5k hands. I however also played a long session on 3 tables against another regular who is a bit more LAGish and ended up down around 4 buyins as we played quite aggressive and I made some thin call downs that turned against. me. Definitely have to go over that session and analyzw how I can improve my game against that opponent as I take pleasure in challenging myself and hopefully beating him up next weekend.

Otherwise, I had some after work drinks with my colleagues on Friday and it was good fun as everyone from the office showed up. Normally only the secretary and maybe one or two associates showed up. I showed off my drinking skills as 5 Long Island Ice Teas couldn't get me down. I however had to leave around midnight already as my fiancee was waiting at home and she was already a little bit upset that i stayed out so long without her :)

I had lunch with friends of mine on Sat and Sunday which was great fun as we haven't seen each other for a couple of weeks. We went to some really fancy restaurants and you can definitley feel that the credit crunch has an impact on retail and consumer businesses already as they were much emptier than normally. A taxi driver even told me that his revenues are down 25% already this year, largely due to the credit crunch / recession.

Pokerwise I really believe that I have the skills to play as high as 10/20 profitable and just have to make sure to keep my BR management in check and not move up to quickly. I want to have at least 25 buy-ins for any level I am playing and if I drop below that I will have to move back down again.

GL to you all and have a good start into the week.

Lot has happened and poker is back

Blog by : teubsch
0

Sorry that it took me so long to post again but a lot of things have happened over the last 6 months and I have played basically no poker. First of all I managed to get accepted to the one MBA program I applied, INSEAD. The program is about to start in Jan and I would first spend 6 months in Signapore and then 6 months in Paris. I have however also got 2 job offers in Private Equity in June and have accepted one of them and started work again in July. Work has been good so far, altough the credit crunch means that it is very slow and in general just not a good time for anyone. Given that I have started my new job I am thinking I might not go to INSEAD in Jan but instead postpone it by a year and see how it goes. This way I keep my options open.

The even bigger news is that I proposed to my girlfriend of almost 6 years in May and she luckily said YES!! I planned a whole trip around the proposal where we went to the South of France (St Tropez, Nice, Monacco) and even watch the F1 racing in Monacco. I haven't been to South of France before and thought it was nice but totally overpriced (which might be due to us travelling in style given the special ocassion). I popped the question in Nice and even went down on one knee ;) After we returned to London we organized a big engagement party for all of our friends that happened in Sept and was amazing. More than 200 of our friens from all over the world came to celebrate with us. So as you can see it has been an expenive 6 months for me and that is also the reason why I basically cashed out all of my money from the poker sites to finance the ring and all the other stuff.

This weekend I have started to get back into poker. I have deposted a bit of money at Full Tilt and now have to grind my way up from 2/4 again. I enjoy the challenge and look forward to get back into it. I have set myself a goal as we need to extend our lease next year for the flat that we bought 2 years ago. It''s this weired London thing where you cannot buy a flat in central London outright but every flat has a certain number of years on its lease. our flat has 48 years left, and once it drops below 50 years it becomes difficult to get good mortgage deals. Hence we want to extend it next year which will set us back $200k. It's quite a big ask to win that amount of money in 6-9 months, but I would be really happy if I could win half of the money with poker over that time period.

This weekend started off good as I managed to win $5k and selected tables very weill, but I've also been running superhot and way above EV. The games have definitely gotten tougher but there are still tons of donkeys around as you can see from these hands:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?3396476

http://www.pokerhand.org/?3396486

http://www.pokerhand.org/?3396511

Found a couple of donkeys!!

http://www.pokerhand.org/?3396490

Pretty straighfwd, put him on top pair with a good kicker or straight draw...

http://www.pokerhand.org/?3396494

Hits his 9 outer, that's life and all the money had to go in the middle on the turn (at least mine :)

http://www.pokerhand.org/?3396501

I can win coin flips, juhu!!

http://www.pokerhand.org/?3396504

Not sure if I played that hand well, but folding on flop or turn is very weak. Maybe calling down turn bet and getting it AI when 10 or heart hits on river is best, definitely lower variance play.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?3396516

Major suckout and that wasn''t the only one against BettingBrigader. He was definitely on tilt at this point.

I think those were the most interesting hands. I will be posting on a more regular basis now but will probably only be able to play longer sessions over the weekend given my new job is taking up a lot of time during the week (and I even have to go to work today on Sunday ;(

GL at the tables to you all!!

Poker so so but good GMAT score

Blog by : teubsch
0

Yesterday I scored my highest GMAT score yet, as I managed to get 730. If I could reproduce that kind of result tomorrow, I would be more than happy. I will do another practice test today and hopefully be ready for the real thing tomorrow.
On the poker front, I got stuck yesterday $2k playing 3/6 and 5/10. I was quite happy that I am only down $2k for the day as I was down as much as $4.5 at one point. I played a very long session against Pechorin at 5/10. He is a decent regular but has some leaks, so I think I had an edge in this game and come out winning some money. Also played against BrightGreenPoop who I never played again before and I was very impressed by his game as he mostly outplayed me. Here are the interesting hands:
Sick flop for my hand and as always I cannot make a great laydown with the kinks and got stacked. A better player most certainly would not get stacked here.
Another poor play by me as I decided to turn my hand into a bluff on the turn, which obv does not work if villain holds the nuts as in this hand.
This is one of those hands I am not sure how to play most profitably as I have top pair with a weak kicker on the flop. I think a flop bet is mandatory here but on the river I am not sure if checking or betting is best here. I thought there is a decent likelihood that he has a flush or straight draw so decided to bet the turn which backfired as he turned two pair.
Done everything right here but Pechorin manages to hit his flush and to be fair he had a lot of equity in this hand. Nothing really I could do about getting stacked here.
Decided to slowplay my AT here as this would normally be a reraise pre-flop. When I hit the Ace on the flop I am going with the hand and just got unlucky that he turned two pair on me again.
For a change I manage to win a race, which was nice.
I put him on a weak Ace here given that he only called pre flop. My call on the flop is pretty standard given that I have a flush draw and middle pair. I ended up having him dominated although he managed to suck out on the turn but I hit my flush on the lucky river.
I guess this is not a good call as I was really only hoping to hit one of 8 outs to a straight. Sucked out on him by hitting runner-runner which is always nice.
There were a few more interesting hands but I really have to start cranking on with the GMAT in order to be prepared for tomorrow so that is it for today.

Good start to the week

Blog by : teubsch
0

I had a good start this week, playing around 3k hands winning $8k. I mostly played 3/6 and 5/10 and was particularly happy that I had a couple of very good session at 5/10. My win rate since starting this blog has normalized a little bit as I am now making around 9 PT BB/100 which I consider to be very good and I hope to keep it up as I have quite a small sample of only 20k hands.
Otherwise I continued to study for the GMAT although I can't really motivate myself to really get into it as I am pretty sure that I will find a cool job within the next 4 weeks and thus it seems a bit pointless to really put in the long hours you need to get a good GMAT score. I will nonetheless take the test on Thursday and see how it goes. It is quite tiresome as the test takes 4 hours.
Not much else to report, except the biggest pots below:
Eskobar is a regular 5/10 and 10/20 player that is pretty good. I know he could push on the turn with any draw and given the pot odds I was committed and took it down.
Played a longish session against Zekulya in which I was up $4k at one point but he got some back and I think I ended the session up about $1.5k. He seems reasonably aggro and given that he just called on the flop despite a flush and straight draw, I did not put him on an Ace. I thought his most likely holding was a flush draw and as the turn and river blanked off, I decided on checking the river to him and calling any bet. Luckily my read was right.
Got pretty unlucky against Jimmy as we got it in twice with top pair and me holding a weaker kicker. This hand turned it around a bit as I managed to hit my 3 outer and get some of my money back. I think my all-in raise on the flop is pretty standard given that there is a flush draw on the board although he could have an overpair given his pre-flop reraise.
I think I have one hand that I really misplay every single day and this was definitely one of those. Decided to bluff at the pot when he only called my river c bet as I put him on a low pocket pair or two overs. My read was obv wrong and I donk of the rest of my stack on the turn and river.
Again one of those hands where I am not sure myself what the best way to play it is. I have top pair with a weak kicker and given his min raise pre flop I did not put him on a strong hand and thus decided to go all-in on the flop. He outplayed me here as I never put him on kinks. I thought he either flopped trips of had a jack as well. I guess I should have never gone all in here as my kicker is just too weak but it is hard to get away from top pair after he only min raised pre-flop. Still bad play by me though.
Besides poker I am really looking forward to the time when I have a job offer and can finally go to Germany for a while to see my family and I will probably also go to Spain for a week to play some golf. I hope that I can arrange the job thing in a way that I don't start before July so that I have enough time to do a bit of travelling.

Fun but rough weekend

Blog by : teubsch
0

The weekend was a lot of fun although poker did not treat me that well, probably due to the fact that I played really bad poker over the last 3 days. I got stuck $10k pretty early on this weekend and was busy trying to grind my way back to break even. I continue to run well on the 2/4 and 3/6 limits but 5/10 in particular is just not giving me any slack. I think it is partly due to bad table selection by me and just the fact that players are better at these levels. I ended the weekend playing 6.5k hands and down 'only' $2k which is a decent result given that was stuck over $10k at one point.
Besides poker I went to a couple of strip joints on Friday night with a good friend of mine. Don't really go to these places that much anymore but given that my friend is single again and my gf was on a hen night in Spain we thought why not. Ended up going to one club that was alright but not great and then to the best place I have ever been, which is really classy. My approach in strip clubs is that I will only get dances from girls that have silicone as the normal stuff I have at home. Sticking to my task I ended up getting to private dances from a French girl that had cup size H!!! I can truly say that those were the biggest breast I have ever seen live, it was so crazy and I bet she has back problems from all the weight ;)
On Saturday two friends of mine came over to my place and we ended up playing Fifa on the xbox 360 and watching some tv. In the evening we went to a bar as a good friend of ours was moving back to Germany so she had some leaving drinks, which was loads of fun as it started at 6pm and we stayed till midnight which means we had 6h of pure drinking time. Sunday was chilled again with dinner at Yauatcha (great Asian fusion restaurant) topping off the weekend.
Below are some of the biggest pots I played - mostly I get owned:
I actually think that my call on the flop is pretty bad and I even thought that he either has trips or a straight. But then again it is just so hard to lay down kings when there is no ace on the board...
I tried to take a bit more aggressive line here than I would normally do and don't mind my 4 bet pre flop. As I hit top pair on the flop it is again hard to get away from the hand, although I really should have put him on an overpair since he called my 4 bet. Bad play by me again.
I think my play here is fine as Gassit is a very aggro player that often has nothing on this kind of board but c-bets a lot with air. He obv had the worst possible holding for me as I am down to 4 outs really.
In addition to playing bad I also got very unlucky, in particular in this hand. There is just nothing you can do about these kind of hands.
It's very hard to get away from this hand as he would have reraised an overpair and a 7 is not in his range that much. Given that I had a decent kicker I decided to push but unfortunately he did have the 7 and I was drawing dead.
Those were really the biggest pots I lost but now I also want to show you some that I won and my second adventure at 25/50:
As I said before Gassit is very aggro and here he gets it in on the turn with a gutter and flush draw but luckily does not hit.
Bit of a speculative hand here but a decent flop and even better turn and I am never folding on the turn. I manage to hit on the river and get all the money in.
There were couple more big pots but I eventually managed to 'only' be stuck around $7k and then decided late on Sunday night to take a shot at 25/50 as mastrblastr was sitting there and I think I have an edge on him. It took exactly 18 hands before this hand came along:
I think he way overplayed his hand but he probably was a bit annoyed as I was reraising him quite a bit, which was really just due to me getting good hands. I was obv very happy to get the money in with QQ and this time they manage to hold which almost got me completely unstuck!
Those were really the most interesting hands and I will try to find back to my old game as this weekend I just played very poorly and wasn't patient enough. Today I will play a bit of poker but first and foremost study for the GMAT as I am taking it on Thursday.

Quite some variance

Blog by : teubsch
0

Yesterday I played a couple of very volatile sessions of HU NL 2/4 up to 10/20. Although I ended the day up around $4k I almost quit for the day as I was down, at one point, $4.7k. I set myself a stop loss limit of $5k per day and since I almost hit it, I would have had to stop for the day. I then however got a good run of cards and also sucked out really badly in a big pot.
At 3/6 I had a good run making a sick call and winning a coin flip that put me up $1.8k for the session:
My 5/10 session didn't go to well and I lost a total of $2.5k playing these stakes:
I guess I could have gotten away on the turn when he reraises me as he either has a flush or a better Ace all the time. Bit of a stupid call by me and I get stacked.
Not sure I like my call here on the flop or turn. I should either get all the money in on the flop or just fold. On the turn my equity is just too low even against a weak top pair.
So I was down almost $1k and started playing $10/20 against RolandThetrault who is a regular at these stakes and also plays 25/50. His game is very similar to mine although I play a bit more aggressive. He is pretty tight solid player that doesn't bluff too much.
Got very unlucky here as we both had trips and he outkicked me and I can't hit the ace or ten on the turn or river.
Perfect flop for me and we get it all in with him holding an overpair. On the turn I was only scared of a made straight but I think 8J is not in his range a lot so I put him on an overpair or two pair.
Great flop for me and nothing we can do as all the money will always go in on this flop given that he had queens.
And last but not least the probably sickest suck out I have had over the last two months and I was lucky that it happened in a pot that was very sizeable and put me up almost $5k for the day. I quit the games after this as I had more than compensated my loss and was playing for quite a long stretch which impacted my concentration.
Besides poker I had another 3 round interview that went well and I hope they will invite me back for the final round, which would mean that I have final round interviews lined up with two PE firms and third round interviews with another two firms. So the job hunt is going well and I still hope that by the end of May I will have 2 or 3 job offers lined up.
This weekend should be a lot of fun as my gf is going on a hen night to Spain and me and my buddies will hae a guys weekend which will consist of lots of drinking and some sick xbox sessions at my place. Really looking forward to it!
