The Mental Game

So I've been playing NLHE for about 4 months now, and it's been a real learning experience. Every day I've learned something new about strategy and every day I'm amazed at how little I knew the day before.

But... my play at the tables can fall short of what I understand to be optimal away from the tables. I think this comes down to a few simple problems

1) Tilt.
I thought I had a handle on this, and I don't go on crazy monkey tilt ever anymore. But there's definitely some more subtle tilt that goes on. I start folding to 3bets less often ("he CAN'T have it again, my 99 may be good, I'll call and see a flop"). I double-barrell less ("he calls, right fine whatever, have the pot").

2) Playing too long.
Now, I don't want to be the guy who plays long sessions when losing and short sessions when winning, but I can definitely get into a mindset where I think "I'm crushing today and it's only 2am, I can probably get up another buy-in if I play a couple more hours".

3) Focusing on $$$.
I pay WAY too much attention to whether I'm up or down for a session. If I'm down, it's really hard to get back into my A-game.

So this is what I'm going to work on fixing. I've got a sensible schedule for playing that will keep me from playing too long, and I've edited my HEM stats to hide my winnings (just keeping EV BB/100, so I can track my EV). Not sure how to best deal with the tilt, but I guess as soon as my reaction to a 3bet from an uknown is "Motherf%@$£" instead of "Thanks for letting me know you've got TT+ or AK" I'll get out of the game.

GL @ the tables.

BTW - If any of this sounds at all familiar, do check out the Brain Fail series, or any of Jared Tendler's videos :)
