Last week's Live Poker Recap....

Booked another winning week. Went 3/4 in my sessions for 6.5 BI's. Friday's session was really frustrating as I kept getting coolered. I'd get it all back only to get coolered again. I was either even or down a BI throughout the session. Finally, after running KK into AA, I decided to get up and take a loss. I was pretty exhausted from a marathon session week...

Tuesday 5/5 NL

The week actually started off mild. On Tuesday, Eskal decided to come to my reg game at my buddy's club. I actually went a little late because I didn't want to play on the main table with Eskal and was hoping to jump on to the second table. I have a piece of the Tuesday game so I tend to be a bit more strategic and business minded when it comes to my playing in the game. Obv, the longer the game runs, the more money in my pocket. I like to call it live rakeback. Anyway, I jumped on the second table when it got 8 handed. There were some big stacks at the table as this table seemed pretty nutty. I bought in for 200 BB's and was rewarded for it immediately when I got in AA vs KK right away and had 400+ BB's in front of me in the first rotation. All of a sudden players started busting each other and before you knew it, the second table broke. So, I ended up grabbing some food at the bar around the corner and talking with some acquaintances. I did jump back into the main game later on and ended up giving away close to a BI in this hand...

I probably have the most hand history against this particular player. The hand was straddled to 10 and because it was a very active game, I decided flat in EP hoping to disguise my hand. My best case scenario is that a usual iso raise comes from the back and I get to play HU with one of the fish at the table with a very disguised hand. Worse case scenario happens however when I get in a multi-way pot with the BB and the straddler. Flop also comes connected and draw heavy. When seat 2 bets out pot here, I give him credit for a pair (with or without SD), slight over pair, or a flush draw. I decide to flat the flop as I feel I'm far ahead of his range and would be folding out a ton of worse hands with a raise. When the 7 comes on the turn, he immediately bets out close to pot again. The way and how quickly he bet the turn made me think that he was extremely weak and so I flat again for the same reasons. Looking back however, I think I should have raised as the board is getting unfriendly fast and I don't want him to run into some funny straight with a pair or a flush draw. The K comes on the River and he thinks for a few moments and bets again and at that point, although there is a slight possibility that he had me crushed on the flop, I felt most likely that he either turned his hand into a bluff or ran into a pair with a K high flush draw. 2 pair instead... Ugh...

Recovered some of that loss back and ended Tuesday up 1.5 BI's.

Wednesday 5/5 NLHE & 5/5 PLO

I started late on Wednesday. Goodfella and I went to Queen Margheritta Pizza for Eskal's birthday dinner. The place is basically an upscale pizza joint in a hipster neighborhood. I actually like the set up of the place a lot as they have their bar downstairs while the dinning room is at the top. I ran bad with the menu and ended up ordering what is probably the only bad pizza on the menu. I'd def go back though.

I got to my Wednesday game around 11pm. Sat down and was up close to a BI by 3am or so. I was just thinking about taking the win when I heard someone say "we should play a round of Omaha". I'm no PLO expert by any stretch compared to some of you good PLO players out there. But, in this crowd, at that table... just call me Zigmund. I had a HUGE edge and was super excited to see what happened. We played a round and it was chaos! People were getting chips in the pot for fun! I couldn't find a hand so I just stayed out and watched the insanity. I couldn't stop thinking about how great it would be if we could just keep playing PLO. It went back to NLHE after the PLO round and everyone looked uninterested. Someone goes... "fukk this, lets keep playing PLO". Someone asks me, "Do you mind if we play PLO for the rest of the night?". I reply with.. "Yea, I guess that's ok". Played 5/5 PLO till 1pm the next day! Smashed the entire table for a ton and basically broke the game. Ship it to me!

Got home at 2:30pm, slept till 7 and was at my Thursday game by 8:30...

Thursday 5/5 NLHE

So I showed up Thursday and see almost everyone from Wednesday's session. Some of them haven't slept yet! I start at the main table and within a couple of rotations, the second table starts and I see that there are some big fish. I ask to be moved and within a couple of hands, I'm there. I build my stack to just over 1K after this hand...

I actually thought I was getting everything in on the flop but was off by 35$. Ironically, so did he and hand exactly $35 left.

Around 1am or so, I started taking some really annoying beats...

SO... I get really annoyed at this point. I buy back in for 200 BB's and declare that none of the remaining 7 players are cashing out unless they get up and leave. They take the challenge and we play till 9am and I practically bust each one of them, putting me up on the session. Death Match!

Friday 2/5 NLHE

Annoying session. Took a 1 BI loss and ended early as I mentioned at the beginning of this post.

Friday's session brought up something that I've been thinking about since I've been back in Toronto's Underground Poker Scene. Clubs are not what they used to be! Back in Goodfella's and my day, there were a handful of successful clubs. Now there are clubs at every street corner. I was actually talking about this with a former club owner from my day. Our games used to be good. We had a lot of players that came in throughout a session. There would always be chips adding to the table. Our rake(s) were much lower and we offered food/beverages/cigarettes/anything the players wanted. We talked with our players on a professional and social level. We'd ask our players what they wanted/needed before they had to ask us for it. We had hour hostesses waiting on our players hand and foot. These days, you have a bunch of people running games who have no idea about running a business. Rakes are high and service is low. There are some games that are run well. A buddy of mine runs a game and if you jokingly tell him you want lobster tomorrow. He'll have a lobster for you when you show up. Its a rarity around here these days. Not impressed with the new generation of club owners. Actually pretty annoyed with them. I guess I realized that the good old days of Underground Poker in Toronto are... DEAD. Makes me sad to be honest. The games are still soft enough and there is enough new money coming into the table to compete with the chop. Feels weird to be on this side of the coin....

The Tuesday Tourney is today and I'll be there to defend my title. Back 2 Back 1 Time ?

Back to the grind....

Peace. 2.
