The punishment does not always fit the crime

Blog by : jeff218

In a short hearing yesterday, our city attorney, Adam Altman, was fined $500 for digging a trench across a country road.

First, the why. He cut the trench to drain water away from his home. This spring we had some pretty significant flooding in the area, with a lot of houses outside of town being threatened by high water levels. This guy took it upon himself to cut the road apart to give his home some relief. The issues with this are:

1. It creates a serious hazard for anybody driving down that road. An unmarked trench a couple of feet wide is a good way to kill somebody speeding along at even 40-50 mph.

2. When he drains the tens of thousands of gallons away, it has to go somewhere. While our area is not exactly overflowing with people, the area where he is has at least 1-2 farms every mile. Basically, in doing this, he put others at risk for the very thing he was attempting to avoid.

3. IT IS ILLEGAL

I am not sure what the maximum fine is, or even what it should be. What I do know is that $500 is not much a deterrent when trying to save your home.

"Mr. Miller, if you pay me $500, I will save your house from $25,000 in water damage. Do we have a deal?"

It seems to me that our courts just set a VERY dangerous precedent going forward. If I was in a similar situation, I'd be digging up roads left and right.

Did this guy get off because of who he is? Methinks so...

----------------

No idea why I felt the need to rant about this here, but I did. In other news....

-Been home two days with a sick kid. It sucks to see her sick, but it is part of being a dad. The shitty part, but a part nonetheless.

-Tuesday Spewday was a pretty good success. For more info on these private, but open to CR members, MTT's to be held every Tuesday, please check out Lana's blog (will be a couple entries below this one on the Featured page).

-SSNL HU is going OK. I am clearly getting better and am learning a lot. What I really need to do is play more to get more experience. That is hard because....

-Fallout 3 is still dominating my life. I am about half way through and 40+ hours in. It has not been good for my game or social life, but fuck is it an amazing game.

That is all I have for now. Will hopefully be back soon.

There Really are no Pretty Indian Girls Named John...

Blog by : jeff218
0

...who were born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent.

I've always had this belief and thought ingrained in my head and I am pretty certain that it is the damn near truth now because my opinion is basically fact. Indian girls named John who were born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent may be the ugliest and worst looking ethnicity of all humans in this world in the history of forever.

I'm certain that this statement will spark some comments and haters, especially since there is some incomprehensible Indian girls named John who were born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent fetish by American men. That's OK, because no attention is bad attention, and I am an attention whore! I grew up in a very small Indian girls named John who were born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent population area in South Dakota and never really grew up with Indian girls named John who were born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent friends, so I gave it a chance. Now I have lived in some parallel dreamland universe for six months and traveled to blah blah blah blah blah and have never been convinced otherwise.

I challenged both Raquel (no idea who this is, I just like using random first names with no explanation of who the person is) in Vegas and my buddy The Situation in Jersey to find me an Indian girl named John who was born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent who is drop dead gorgeous, and both of them failed. While some have no chest hair, and this makes them 'less repulsive' to guys, I'm talking the kind that seem female, don't have calloused elbows, and are not "packing heat".

Even in the celebrity world there are very few, if any, Indian girls named John who were born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent who I think fit the category. Well known Indian girls named John who were born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent celebrities like um, well, there is Bjork and, errrrrr, well, at least Bjork don't have any type of sex appeal to me (she is an Indian girl named John who was born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent, right?).

I'd be curious to hear what actresses/Indian girls named John who were born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent you guys find super attractive (at least 3's). Feel free to post a link in here so I can critique since I am obv the world authority on this topic. I'm sure I'm in the minority of this conclusion.

Maybe I'm just a fat white guy with an non-Indian girl named John who was born in Canada to gay parents of Icelandic descent fetish...

UFC 116 Predictions

Blog by : jeff218
0

I've been in MMA heaven for a couple weeks now. What with UFC 115, the Ultimate Fighter Finale, Strikeforce, two Bellator cards, and Sengoku 13, I've hardly had time to sleep. Continuing the trend, we will have several good friends over for 116 tonight. Any time Lesnar fights it is more than just a PPV, especially around here. For those who don't know, I grew up 30 minutes from Brock and wrestled for competing high schools. A mere year apart in age, I've seen him wrestled probably 100 times in my life....and still don't like him. Despite that, for some unknown reason, I cheer for him. I don't pretend to understand the forces at work here, I just roll with it.

Outside of the main event this card does not have some of panache of others, especially with Wand being unable to fight (I almost cried upon that news). That being said, the main card has five truly compelling matchups. Any single one of the fights could absolutely end up being fight of the night. How often do you get to say that? If I was a betting man, I'd lay a unit on each of the underdogs.

Before I kick into predictions, I'd like to state that this card has the highest percentage of hard to spell/pronounce names in the history of a UFC event. They are an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igor_Vovchanchyn">Igor Vovchanchyn away from making my head explode...

George Sotiropoulos vs Kurt Pellegrino

Both of these fighters think they are headed for a title shot. Whoever comes out on top here will be watching Florian/Maynard with baited breath. It could work out that the loser there gets the winner here. It is also possible that if Florian wins, Silva/White make him win one more before a third crack at BJ (yes, he will beat Edgar). If that is the case, this fight is all the more huge.

What somebody will have to explain to me is how Pelligrino plans to stop Sotiropoulos on the ground? Joe Stephenson is maybe the best grappler in the division this side of Clay Guida and had absolutely nothing for the Aussie.

Sotiropoulos by decision

Stephan Bonnar vs Krzysztof Soszynski

Getting the obvious out of the way, the stoppage in the first fight was pure bullshit. The part that galls me the most is that Bonnar was making headway right as it got stopped. He had a lot of ground to make up, but who knows what would have happened? That being said, I see more of the same here. Bonnar is a stationary target for a powerful and crisp stand up fighter. Unless Bonnar hurts the Pole and is able to follow up with a RNC, or something similar, I think it will be a fairly close, fairly exciting, but not all that suspenseful fight.

Soszynski by decision

Chris Lytle vs Matt Brown

Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to the fight of the night.

Chris Lytle absolutely LOVES to stand and trade. Brown will be more than happy to oblige, making for at least 2 or 3 minutes of stupid fun action. We should be so lucky to see a third round in this fight. The problem for Brown is that nobody scraps as well as Lights Out.

Lytle in 3rd via exhausted and exhausting TKO

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs Chris Leben

A Leben lover, it is hard for me to say this, but I am not sure he'd give Sexiyama much trouble even if he had not just fought two weeks hence. Can he catch the Japenese fighter and put him on queer street? Of course. Will he? It is not likely.

Akiyama via GNP in round 2

Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin

I've read all the websites, seen all the Facebook posts, and heard the pundits on Inside MMA on HDNet. It seems as though the entire world, save for odds makers, think Carwin will knock Brock out in the first round. Look, I know Brock is not exactly a rocket scientist, but he is also not so stupid as to test his standup against the hardest puncher in all of MMA (yeah, I said it). Even if he does, Carwin is not exactly a technician with his fists, giving Lesnar the opportunity to close distance. If he does that, and he will, the fight is over. With apologies to GSP, nobody has ever had as fast and powerful of a shot as the big South Dakotan. He will put this fight on the mat inside of a minute.

Basically, outside of a flash KO, I don't see how Carwin wins this. If it goes to a decision, it will be because Brock laid on him for 5 rounds, so he won't be winning a decision. I mean, would he even have his power after 4 rounds of being out wrestled?

Basically, if Carwin does not end it in the first, or early in the second, he doesn't win.

Lesnar by GNP in the 2nd (at the latest)

We have a big day out at the farm for the 4th tomorrow afternoon (preceded by 18 holes in the morning). There will be at least 50-70 people out there, making for a grand time. We generally have some beers, shoot some skeet, and fire off some fireworks. It is a good ol' South Dakota time.

Monday is my final trip to Las Vegas, bringing to a close the craziest month of my life.

Quick update on a few things (poker, Vegas, podcast)

Blog by : jeff218
0

With all my Vegas blogging, I've not done much to update on some other stuff that is going on. I have a few minutes before lunch, so I'll effort to hit a couple things quick-like.

I head out on Monday for 4 more days in Las Vegas. This time I will be accompanied by Dahlig (Garrett) and Swinney (both are, like myself, CR employees). We are staying at Bally's, which, if nothing else, has a good selection of late night eats and a sick location. They could stand to clean up their gardens and the water feature out front of the joint though. They are both pretty run down.

While there, Swinney and I are going to finally be recording at least 2-3 podcast episodes. For those who are faithful readers, we recorded a pilot episode of the S&M (Swinney and Miller) Podcast last month and posted links on Off Topic and here. It was a little too, ummmm, vulgar (?) to be posted as an official CR podcast, but the brass saw enough potential to give us the green light. All we have to do is tone it down and shorten it a bit. Seems easy enough...

The podcast is not at all a poker related thing. We actually have to write material for it, which, honestly, is the best part. The reason we've not done an official episode yet is simply because the method of recording, conference call, doesn't jive with Swinney's cell phone. Unsurprisingly, it is tough to convince him to stay late at work to use a land line. We are efforting on alternatives (Skype), but have not made the leap of purchasing call recording software yet.

On the poker front, I've been grinding vids like a man possessed. I'd become pretty frustrated and unmotivated lately, so I decided to learn something new. Thus begins my adventures in HU poker. This may be misguided, but right now I feel like I would be a winning player at 50nl, if I used very strict table selection, despite not playing a hand of HU in months (and very few then). Lucky for me I have a solid sensei (knox828), who is willing to help as needed. I am looking very much forward to this new chapter and feel very invigorated by the challenge.

That's all I got for today. I'll try and hop back later this week.

Vegas Update! Details on days 4, 5, and 6 within...

Blog by : jeff218
0

I've got all sorts of stuff to cover, so lets hop right into my most recent Las Vegas trip!

For my second summer foray into the city of sin, my lovely wife came along. She's never been, so it was very cool to play tour guide. Basically we spent two and a half days wandering the strip, trying to see everything we could. We hit all the major casinos except Mandalay Bay and the Strat, both of which are far enough out that walking that much further seemed most unpleasant (esp in 98 degree weather). This is the first time I have really pounded pavement out there, which led to a couple unpleasant discoveries:

1. I had not ever really noticed the amount of pan handlers. If you start at Caesar's and end up and MGM, all in one afternoon, you may also be surprised at the multitude of men holding cardboard signs with surprisingly good penmanship, which possibly supports my father's hilariously genuine theory that they all have more money then we do.

What I cannot figure out is why the city allows this to happen? I don't mean to be callous, and yes I know there are little cards with nekkid women laying all over the sidewalk, but for such a touristy area, I am just a bit surprised they don't crack down on something that is a detriment the whole experience (and the thing the city's economy is based upon - tourism).

2. You literally can't walk 10 feet without being solicited by somebody. I honestly don't know who in the fuck gives these people money, but somebody has to be, or they would not be hounding me every 30 seconds. By the end of day two, I wanted to punch anybody who had tickets, girls, or anything else for sale.

Other major events:

  • Within three hours of being in town, I had left my Blackberry in a cab. My wife spent a good portion of the next couple days attempting to recover it, bless her heart. The end result is that I need to drop $300 on a new one. I was/am not impressed.
  • I know it is very touristy, and possibly a bit emo, but I am in love with the fountains at the Bellagio. Every visit, alone or with others, I end up watching them for at least an hour. My wife was equally enthralled, so we spent some quality time watching the show.
  • We stayed at Paris (ty for the sick deal Orbitz). While it is not exactly Wynn, and the casino floor is among the smallest on the strip, it is also one of the coolest places I've been in. I really dug the old world Paris motif and, if not for the really hard beds, would gladly stay again. I was blown away with how comfy my king was at TI the week before, this was a let down. We did get stuck in a double room (no singles were clean at 4pm...wtf?), so maybe their kings are better.
  • I visited Caesar's the first time (had been in the Forum Shops, but that's it). I don't know what it is, but I think i like it more than the nicer, more ballyhooed joints such as Wynn. It is huge and spread out, which I liked for some reason, and the poker room is simply amazing. I've heard the games are tougher there than other rooms, so I'll reserve end judgment for a later date.
  • Aria is sick awesome. The modern decor is unlike anything else I've seen in LV (The Venetian, Bellagio, and Wynn all go for more of a luxurious, velvety feel). It was very cool and well worth the walk into City Center.
  • Serendipity 3, out front of Caesar's, is awesome. After hearing her claim it was the best she's ever had (and she has had many), I tried my wife's pina coloda, and it was freaking stupid good. I had a Thai beef salad that ranks as one of my three or four favorite meals out of dozens in my Las Vegas history - It was simply excellent. Oh, and the bar tender gave us some extra frozen hot chocolate that he made. I am not a choco guy, but even I kinda liked it. Amber was in love, or at least deep like. It should be noted that they also serve an $1000 sundae (http://www.foodmall.org/entry/grand-opulence-worlds-most-expensive-sundae/). We did not partake.
  • Our last night there, we had an amazing meal at Delmonico (steakhouse at The Venetian). It cost us a pretty redic amount of money, but I got to try fois gras and enjoyed wild mushroom crusted fillet medallions in a Worcestershire, mushroom, and bacon sauce. I also had orange mascarpone cheesecake....so good and so worth half of my wife's paycheck!
  • Our trip home was marred by a odd and unusually long wait at check-in at the airport, followed by us finding out snow globes are not allowed in carry-on luggage (something I feel stupid for not having thought of), followed by a 15 min delay in security, followed by a slight scramble to make our plan (10 min to spare). All the rushing aside, I feel really bad that my kid did not get her gift and wish we had not blown the $12 on the damn thing. Lesson learned, I guess.
The reason I went to Vegas int he first place was for the 3rd, and final, CR happy hour. I can't tell you all how much fun I've had meeting members, seeing old friends, and just getting to know people. One of the highlights for me was when Kara Scott introduced herself to my wife and I. She is about three times nicer than you could ever imagine (if you read her posts on General Off Topic or her blog you can get a sense how cool of a person she is). She and Amber (Mrs. jeff218) spent a good portion of the evening chatting. Amber officially adores her and had nothing but positive things to say about Ms. Scott.

Kara came with Brian Townsend (her beau) and the guy who hired me, Ezra. My affinity for Ezra has not waned, even though he left the company. I am very grateful for the hour or so that we spent together at the party. He is one of the most interesting and intelligent people in the history of forever, so I always enjoy our chats. I am gushing...

After the party wound down, Lana, Amber and I headed to Isla over at TI. Lana was tired of burgers, so she picked the joint (Mexican cuisine). Never ones to shy away from some chips and salsa, we tagged along. The next couple of hours were spent chatting about CR and other things. I had a good time and my Amber found another CR person she really likes. I need to be careful before she asks for a membership...

Speaking of my wife, she spent like an hour at the party at a table with Noah and some bum named Corwin (better known as [vital]myth). He basically psycho analyzed her in his hyper-intelligent manner, which she got a kick out of, especially considering her profession (social worker).

At this point I'd like to say that I could not be more happy how Joe, Corwin, Noah, Lana, Kara, PJJ, Ezra, and the rest of the gang treated Amber. She was an instant celebrity and has been begging me to come to the Main Event party on Tuesday the 6th (sorry babe, this is guys night out imo). She is hooked on my CR friends, which is pretty fucking cool.

I head back out on Monday for four more days. While I am looking very forward to it, and the fact Swinney and Dahlig will be attending, I am ready for this to all be done. Being there is fun, but the 200 mile drive to the airport (that's one way, folks) and the time away from my little girl can be mentally draining. It will be nice to have a normal schedule and life when I return home.

Speaking of my schedule, there are some big, important changes on the horizon for me that I cannot wait to get started on. More on all of that later this week, so stay tuned!

-Jeff

ps - it is 2am and I am tired. No proofread or spell check on this bad boy. Sorry!

Vegas, Day 3 - MORE POKER CONTENT?!?!?!?!?

Blog by : jeff218
0

Day 3 was actually Saturday, but since I was traveling back home yesterday, I did not get a post up. Hopefully I can recall the deets of the big hands I played...

  • I woke up, checked email, watched the rest of Team America (started it Fri night) and headed for MGM. Once there I ate at the Grand Wok and headed for the poker room. I had a very action filled 10+ hrs at the table.
  • My first big hand of the day was my only real high point. About an hour in I picked up AA in mp. UTG, a solid young player, raised to $10. I ovb considered a 3b but sitting in the sb was mr. aggro. He had made some large squeezes several times earlier and was not at all afraid to tangle. I decided to gamble and just flatted. SB obliged, making it $30. UTG called, and I raised it to $100 total ($70 more for the math challenged). SB INSTA shipped, UTG tanked for a min and folded, I checked to make sure it was not A4, lol, and called. SB tables KK (UTG claims he folded QQ, which is hot because the flop was Q high). The aces held and I won a ~$500 pot.
  • I folded a lot for the next 90 minutes or so as the table also experienced some turnover. This resulted in the 3 seats to my immediate left being filled by a couple and a buddy of theirs. Turns out they all work for (or maybe own, not sure) a private jet charter service based in LA. They were all fantastically nice people who I genuinely enjoying playing with for the next 6-7 hours. They were also AWFUL poker players. FWIW, do you know what a private jet from LA to Italy costs? "Around $100k" was the answer I got.
  • Speaking of new players, we also added Mr. Canada, a brutally bad player, and his soon to be arch nemesis, the Mad Hatter, who was very solid. They gave each other these nick names as they jabbed back and forth for the next couple of hours. The line of the decade came out of their squabbles. Mr. Canada bet/raised almost every flop. On a particular hand, he led into the Mad Hatter, who called and hit a draw on the turn. After the hand, Mr. Canada said, "If that bet did not deter you, what would it have taken?". Without a seconds thought, he replied, "A loaded gun." After 45 minutes of listening to them argue, it was the deal ender. Mr. Canada literally gave up at that point. It was fucking epic.
  • In the midst of all the new and interesting players, I managed to lose a bit more than $200 in 20 minutes. The first such hand was vs a guy wearing a hoodie from some law school. Unsurprisingly, he played waaaaaaay tight. I picked up KK in mp, raising it to $12. He wakes up in the sb and makes his first bet or raise of the day, popping it to $30. I considered shoving, but what is he really calling me with? I think he folds his AK and QQ way too much to make it anything but a huge gamble, so I called. The flop was QQ8, two diamonds (I did not have K of d). He checks to me, and here is where I fucked up. In hindsight, this is a clear check behind spot. A bet accomplishes nothing, but I made one anyway. It got me check-raised, and I folded, having no clue what I could possibly be ahead of. This is not the kind of guy who 3bets A8 of diamonds pre, if you know what I mean. This hand cost me about $80.
  • In hand two, of the dubious 3, I had AK. I raised from ep and had 3-4 callers. The flop was K78, I led strong, and had one caller (terrible milf who was part of the private jet charter crew). The turn was a J, I bet again, she called. The river was a 9. I finally gave up, she bet an obscene amount, and I folded. This cost me about $60-70.
  • To cap it all off, was this gem.... I had QJ in late position. There was a limp two to my left from a new player. He was youngerish but I had no real read on him. He had folded his way around the first couple circuits and I had him profiled as a possibly solid internet type. Anyway, I raised and only he called. The flop was Q6Tr. He ck/called. Turn was a 2 and he ck/called again. Now the pot is around $90. My intention was to check behind on a non-helping river, protecting me in the event he slow played a set or had limped KQ from mp. Well, the river was a J, putting a board of Q6T2J, and he led $60. Wtf? I tanked, thinking of what he would do this with. I instantly discounted AK as a possibility, hoping he would not limp it pre. JT was certainly out there, as was 66 or TT. But the hand that haunted me the most was 98. If I profiled him correct, 98 was 100% in his limp/calling range. And if he put me on a Q, which he should have by the time I bet the turn, he would probably consider a dbl gutter being a fairly hidden draw - if he hit, he would get paid. Well, after thinking for some time, I eventually folded, showing him my cards (I don't usually do this, but tbh, I was on steam after the previous 15 min of bs). He added to my pain by tabling QJ... I still like my fold, even if I was wrong this time
  • Not 30 minutes later, I had KK and raised from ep. The milf called. Did I explain earlier that when she sat, and her husband bought her in, that she had to have the blinds explained to her? Sigh.... The flop was Q72ss. I bet $25 and she insta raised to $100. I though, "OK, so somebody has a Q" and shoved. She had aces. I re-bought for $300.
  • The rest of the night was fairly uninteresting hands wise. I buttoned myself up and played very well, getting back $90 of my lost dollars without ever really playing a big hand.
  • There was one interesting episode between QJ guy and drunk milf. They were involved in a hand where QJ guy bet the river and milf called. QJ instantly called the floor, explaining that she was going to muck but her husband grabbed her leg and shook his head. He went on to say that the same thing happened in my KK vs AA hand with her and that he warned them for it then (I had headphones on and did not hear/notice it, thank god....I would have gone ballistic. I'm actually, literally, happy I did not see it.). A massive shouting match ensued between the 3 jet ppl and QJ guy. Since the dealer did not see it and nobody else would cop to witnessing the event, the floor warned them and said play on. IMO, QJ guy was telling the truth. He was a solid player who, I think, really thought he saw something. The milf and her hubby were really bad, constantly had to be told it was their turn, tried raising $15 bets to $25 total, etc. No way they even knew they were doing something wrong, but it still was.
For the trip, I won $5 in about 17-18 hrs of poker, lost $50 on UFC 115, watched all of season 1 of Eastbound and Down, Team America, and Sherlock Holmes. Basically, aside from working on Friday, I treated this like a nice little vacation. It was relaxing, refreshing, and well-deserved, if I do say so myself.

I head back out on Sunday with my wife, who will be making her first visit. Blogs will follow.

Vegas, Day 2 - WARNING, POKER CONTENT

Blog by : jeff218
0

Picking up where I left off on yesterday's blog post...

  • I ended up gorging at the the TI buffet for supper. Food was decent for buffet standards, but not great. The highlight was desert. They had a cotton candy machine and fresh, warm mini-doughnuts. I went back for 3rds.
  • When I was done getting chubbier, I hit up the Mirage for some 1/2nl. I got right in, but soon found out I had literally the worst seat at the table. There were three not-terrible players sitting and they were all to my immediate left. I stayed tight, and folded my way to being down a few dollars to start the session. After a couple hours, the two guys right to my left left (left) and were replaced by an idiot and an empty chair. What's more, the other solid player got really shit-housed and forgot how to play poker. He proceeded to play every hand, all for a big raise preflop followed by a big cbet post. $500 and 4 hrs later, he left empty handed. I got zero of it.

Things were not all bad, though. Hands of note:

  • I picked up AK and flopped AKJss. I basically potted it into three people and took it down.
  • Flopped a set with AA on a 89Asss and again took it down with a big bet on the flop.
  • Had AK again, flopped top two again on a miserable flop again (AKTss), won the pot with again a cbet again. Again.
  • At some point, a huge fat guy who looked like a busto Ron Jeremy (!!!) sat down across the table from me. Not only was he really epically gross, but he also was a douche bag. It did not take long for him to win a decent pot from me. I had QQ in ep and made it $12, he called. Flop was 78T (yes, every flop I saw was terrifying). I led strong, he called. Turn bricked, and I bet a bit more than half pot. I considered betting more, but he had just over $100 behind. I was not keen on committing myself to calling a shove in this spot. The river was a 9, which got a prompt check/fold out of me. He tabled 99.
  • There were several spots where I picked up pots with air when guys played hands face up. One example saw me raise ATo utg, five handed. Only the sb called. Flop was 723 and went ck/ck. The turn was a 9, I think. He led $20 into a pot of $17 and I called, putting him on either a small, vulnerable pair or total air. The river was essentially a blank and he checked. I thought briefly about seeing if my ace was good, but instead fired $35 into $55ish. He folded, showing a 7.
  • The big hand of thew night was a fun one. I had AKs (diamonds) in early position seven handed. I bumped it to $12 and got a single caller (busto Ron Jeremy). Side note: The guy who dealt this hand looked just like Bob Barker. I'm not even joking. Where was I? Right.... So, the flop is 368 with two diamonds. I bet $15 into $20ish, he called. Turn was an 9. Awesome card. Undaunted, I decided to fire small (around half pot or a little less), thinking he would not put me on a flush draw. If I was right, he'd likely call, not raise, with any made hand, esp in position, hoping I'd fire the river. Well, he fucked himself by doing exactly that - I binked the river for the nut flush. With the pot being around $100, I had to decide what I could get out of him. I thought about betting $80, knowing he could not fold a straight or set. I was worried about folding out a hand like 89 or even some bs over pair (TT), so I eventually settled on $60. I wish I had gone with my initial read (straight or set) and fired more, because he snapped with 57.
  • I took off about 2am after ovplaying for around seven hours. Total winnings for the night were $115.

It is about 11am here now. The plan is to clean up, eat, and play some more. I'll not be going back to Mirage as they rake every fucking pot for their high hand jackpots. $5 a pot in rake is way too much for 1/2 imo. I'm considering MGM, Caesars (never played there), and the Rio. I'll likely decide based on what I choose lunch-wise.

Next blog probably won't be up until Monday as I'll be traveling tomorrow.

Vegas Trip Report, Day 1 of 11

My Vegas travels started off with a bang last night. Gunna do this in bullet points...

  • Got in to the hotel (staying at TI) about 4pm local. I immediately spent 30 min trying to fix my suddenly not wanting to boot up laptop. It is working again, but I am nervous to shut it off.
  • Got to Stripburger for CR party #2 about 5:30. I met a lot of cool people there including several active members (clockwork07, pjj, laff2er), a bunch of friends (Taylor, Lana, Joe, Noah, basspoet, Knox, cpar, duckslayer2k, mkind, Cecil), and a bunch of other new people.
  • I had two personal highlights. The first was jungleman signing in, seeing my name tag, reaching out to shake my hand, and saying, "Finally, I get to meet you." I laughed at him and said something like "I get that a lot."
  • The other highlight was me leading Poker News Daily (http://www.pokernewsdaily.com/) reporter, and CR member, Sean Gibson around for a piece for their site. Basically he recorded me with a video camera as I walked around and made an ass of myself and others. In my defense, I was drinking and am, in general, a dipshit.
  • After the party basspoet, joe, Noah, Lana, and I headed to the Rio to rail David Benefield at the final table of the $5k event. We met up with the aforementioned Sean and Joe's backer Vinney then basically drank Milwaukee's Best Light for 2 hours.
  • I came back to TI, got some room service, and watched some Eastbound and Down before crashing pretty early.
  • Woke up around 10am today and have been working for the last 4-5 hours or so. I did stop long enough to have my first experience with pho. Color me impressed.
I'm not sure what tonight will bring. Currently it sounds like Lana and I will be getting some dinner as I am about to head to the Rio to rail Matt Matros at the final table of the limit event (he is going for bracelet number 2 this WSOP). After that, some cash game grindage is on the docket fo sho.

Wish me luck!

48 hours from now, I will be drunk in Las Vegas

Getting soooooooo close!!!!!! This will be my 3rd summer in a row heading West to the deserts of Nevada, but the excitement is just as strong now as it was for the first. I feel like a schoolgirl (which could be the panties I am wearing, but who knows...)

For this trip, the maiden voyage of three in the next four weeks, I'll be traveling alone to Sin City. I arrive around 2:45 local, which will give me enough time to head to Treasure Island, check in, clean up, and hit Strip Burger for the second CR cocktail hour. I'll be the chubby white kid with a double Absolut/cranberry and a name tag that says, "Awesome" on it. OK, not really. It will say Jeff218, which, imo, is still pretty awesome.

I plan to spend copious time relaxing over my short stay. I don't want to burn out, and have promised myself no table game degeneracy or black out drunkeness. What I will be doing is sleeping in, playing quite a lot of 1/2 and spending some time at the Rio, hopefully railing some CR members while meeting others. I'm also anxious to finally get some face time with our newest admin, asufan23 (and to make racist comments at old admin, knox828).

Of course it is always nice to see Taylor, Andrew, Lana and the rest of the CR crew. As those of you who spend time on the forums know, my favorite thing about CR is the social aspect. Spending time in person with people I usually on talk to via IM or conference call is a very welcome change of pace that I always look forward to when the opportunity arises.

The two saddest days of the year are December 26 and the day I fly home from Vegas every summer. Here is to hoping that between now and then, I have a shit load of fun, make some money, and have some stories to tell.
