Student update

Blog by : hookem148

We've had two lessons each and have made some good headway. We're definitely making some positive progress and hopefully the changes will have some lasting effects. The first lessons were live sweats with HEM review afterwards, but I didn't feel we got too much out of them. One of the guys suggested that he record multiple sessions and piece together a 60-minute video of problem spots for later review. I really like this idea and we'll most likely do that next week.

On the last lesson we spent most of the time doing HEM review. It's so important to review your results. There are tons of ways you can search for leaks using all the filters. We focused on river results where our ultimate decision was a passive one.

Filter your HEM separately for:
River Check Call = True
River Bet Call = True

(This is in the filters section, in the "More filters" tab on the far right, and then scroll down to River Filters.)

River play is a typical leak for lots of players. And the best thing about it is that stats don't lie. If you feel that you are making good river calls (given or not given pot odds) then the stats should be positive. If they aren't then you are paying off on the river too much. Period. Especially at the micro stakes. It's so easy to bet for value and just fold to resistance, as most of the players are Level 1 thinkers.

We'll have some before and after stats posted at the end of the month, and then an update or two beyond that. Hopefully for everyone this little experiment shows some nice results.

The good old days...

Blog by : hookem148

I found a flash drive in an old laptop bag for a computer that I had a few years ago. I dusted it off and stuck in the computer and it had two images on it:

First half of 2007

First half of 2007

These were my results for the first 174 days of 2007. I put this together when I was trying to buy my first house. The bank wanted a record of my payroll for the year. I told them I was a self-employed poker player and this was all I had to give them for 2007. Banks don't usually like things like that, so I ended up having my mom join in on the application and become a co-owner of the house.

So what were the games like 3.5 years ago? Well I can honestly say that the games were softer. I remember playing pretty darn nitty and just waiting for people to donate. If you look at my 5/10 results, obviously I ran really hot, but you can't see my 1/2 and 2/4 results which were somewhere in the 3-5 PTBB/100 range. And I only had 127k hands in 6 months? I've gotten close to doing that in a month lately.

So where does that leave me? Well, I've started playing fewer tables. I think that will make a big difference in my winrate. I also plan on moving up a bit more aggressively. I'm WAY overrolled right now, which is really nice. But I think I'm going to start setting some very attainable goals for moving up faster. This should make for some nice motivation for getting back in the swing of things.

(To those asking, "What the hell happened?" --- I withdrew my roll near the end of 2007 and (almost entirely) stepped away from poker for about 2.5 years for a myriad of personal reasons.)

The best things in life are free:

I feel like giving back to CR, so I'm looking to coach two students free of charge. You'll each be getting four 90 minute lessons which will all be in November. I'm looking for two people who are:

CR members
Micro stakes 6max players
Losing or break even players over a 50k+ hand sample

PM me with why I should select you. Please include screen name, stakes, winrate, sample size, and anything else you feel like adding.

I'd like to have two people selected by the end of this month so the sooner you apply, the better. If you have any questions, post them here and i'll respond.

If

Blog by : hookem148

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream-and not make dreams your master,
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And-which is more-you'll be a Man, my son!

-Rudyard Kipling

The kid never really got back to me. I guess he wasn't as excited about poker as I thought. Oh well.
