Very important session

Blog by : golfinn3

So, I just got back from a weekend in Florida with some work friends, Danneman, and high-school roommate Doug and I learned that I am an old man who can no longer run with the young pups. I need at least 8 hours of sleep to function and I can't stay up drinking until 4am and still do anything the next day. It absolutely fries my nerves to drink all night, wake up early, and go have to do stuff. I absolutely hate it. So, I'm hoping I can show some discipline and not put myself in that situation again. At this point, I'm just praying for the weekend to arrive so that I can spend ALL WEEKEND playing poker in my pajamas and taking frequent naps. I will specifically avoid doing anything and will play cards, watch tv, and sleep. Can't wait!

So Florida was fun, it was nice to see Danneman and Doug, and hang out with my work buds outside of work. Kicking Dan's ass in golf was pretty good too! The old man (that'd be me) still has his golf swing.

So, I hadn't played poker in almost a week (lol, edit: umm...forgot the poker I played in the airport and in the hotel room with Danneman...my bad), and I just finished a very key session. I entered this session with high hopes and expectations. I had put together three winning sessions at .25 .50 multi-tabling, and was really excited about continuing to grind out this decent profit. The more winning sessions I have, the more confidence and excitement I get about playing. However, things started out horribly tonight. Within 1500 hands, I was down 10 buyins....yea, you read it right, 10. That's enormous. I had basically blown through all my profit from the last three sessions at .25 .50 and was heartbroken, thinking all the excitement I had was for nothing, and poker was a zero-sum game and life sucked again. But, I stuck it out and was able to turn it into a winning session after about 1700 more hands. I didn't really do anything special, so I won't say I'm proud of myself for doing anything amazing on the tables, but I just kept it steady and fought the urge to increase stakes/ # of tables, etc. and just continue grinding and having faith in the lawy of large numbers. I ended up winning only $63.80 which is sorta pathetic for 3,255 hands, but it was the upswing of 10 buyins that was most important. It sorta restored my faith in the game and in myself for a bit, and the more experiences I have like this, the happier I'll be.

I don't care to post any hand histories, there aren't that many of interest and I certainly don't wanna stay up to dig them out of pokertracker. This is more of an attitude blog than a mechanics blog, so we'll stay away from the hand histories for tonight.

Three in a row!

So this multi-tabling thing is working out alright. Despite playing about as poorly as I can, I managed to book another winning session at the .25 .50 tables. I think I blame the poor play on the after-work basketball league. We played like complete shit tonight getting blown out 70 29. BY FAR our worst loss of the season. It was part the other team being nasty and part no one on our team doing anything positive, except maybe one of our big men who is always consistent and contributes. Besides that, it was turnover city. Pretty sure we turned the ball over on 50% of our possessions, which is a recipe for disaster against a team that scores at will. Everyone was angry and the mood was a bit sour, and it sorta rubbed off on me.

The second part of the excuse is just feeling a bit rushed. I made a bet with a friend at work that if I wasn't in the office by 9:00am, I owed him 50 bucks. Work has been a bit slow lately, and as a result, I developed some bad habits in terms of snoozing too long, staying up too late, etc. So, now that work is beginning to pick up again, it's time to rid myself of these bad habits the only way I know how....making bets. I guess you can't call it a bet because there is no upside...I can only lose (unless getting to work at a reasonable hour is considered a win!). But that's ok, all I care about is getting to work on time, and hopefully this will do it. So anyway, I wanted to get a nice session in without compromising the waking up around 8:00am part, so I felt like maybe I had to make some moves and make something happen in my session? I got a late start on playing and had a smaller window to play tonight. This is sorta ridiculous because I'm getting in over 2k hands per night, so "making something happen" isn't necessary.

So, if I had to sum up my mistakes, I fell into the "well, he COULD be bluffing" mindset too often and called off a lot of chips. When it's only one river bet at a time, it doesn't seem like much, but those $15 and $35 dollar mistakes eat into your profit bigtime. I could feel myself slipping, and it was almost as if I wasn't controlling my hand, it just reached over and clicked "call." Really mediocre and borderline pathetic stuff, definitely not gonna survive at anything above .25 .50 if I play the way I did tonight, but I guess players down here are really this bad.

I'm gonna try to make a habit of showing a couple of the horrendous/desperate plays I make so that I am forced to confront them and expose myself to the world. I remember the best poker I ever played was when I was staked at 3 6 NL two summers ago by a friend, and as part of the deal, I had to send him my hand histories and results every day. Although I was playing alone, it was as if someone was watching me, and I played the best cards I've ever played (probably). So, I hope this will help slow me down in those moments and force me to say "ok idiotbox, all your millions of fans are gonna read this on your blog". And then maybe I won't do so many dumb things.

So, I'll have to be quick on the hand histories and statistics tonight, it's already 12:45 and I MUST be in bed by 1:00am. SO, here goes, a couple of IDIOT box plays and a couple of interesting spots to discuss. Actually, before I go into specific HH's, here is an overview of the session.

This definitely isn't the worst hand I played, but I hate this one so much. It's such a desperate/hopefuly play that is very very negative EV. I could have saved 33 bucks or so and just folded. I had invested maybe 14 but turned it into my second biggest losing hand of the night. At the time, I'm telling myself "maybe he has a high heart, or maybe he has a J and no other heart" when in reality it's so clear he has me smoked. I think calling is slightly less bad if he pushes, but to me this screams danger. Grrrr....just fold you dumbass.

This is a textbook example of the "well, he COULD be bluffing" desperation call. There is no draw that didn't come in that justifies this bet, there is no reason for him to be call bluffing OOP, he has the A! Sheesh! Hate myself for calling this...it's like I don't even stop to think when this shit happens.

Yea, you wouldn't believe how quickly I called his check min raise and river bet out of frustration. Didn't even stop to think. I'm pretty sure in the process of 14 tabling or whatever I was doing, I called his turn and river bets before another table even popped up. It's like there is a little monster inside of me who forces my mouse over the call button and clicks. HATE THIS, OBVI NO GOOD!

Do you think I'm only getting called by stuff that has me beat? I'm trying to get it all in against a weaker A thinking they won't ever fold it, at the same time protecting against the flush draw. Not sure if I screwed this up or am just questioning my play because I lost to the set. I have been experimenting with overbetting the pot at times, and it's something I'd like to keep in the toolbelt.

I actually think this guy played it well and it wasn't that interesting. I was absolutely 100% folding to a shove preflop, I three bet to see where I was at and he smooth called for deception. Very nice play by him, it worked out that all low cards came. But, really trying to nail this preflop thing down because I lose ALOT of money with QQ to KK and KK to AA, etc. I don't think it's necessary, despite many players saying "just get it in there 6- handed." Maybe I have a spidey sense that no one else does.

I'd like to know specifically what you all do on the turn. I think everything up to the turn is textbook, but maybe a fold instead of a call? I think by the river, my hand is worthless unless he's running an elaborate bluff, so I'm ok with that fold. But turn play?

This hand is sorta comical because of the river fold, but I'd like to know what everyone would have done on the turn. He has checked twice and shown weakness, and I now have open ender + flush draw....is there a way to bet less and fold to a raise? Can I not bet? Don't know if I played this the right way or not...maybe I should bet the flop? Lots of opportunities for discussion even though it's a small pot.

Interesting hand #5 (last one! gotta go 2 sleep!)

Would like to know how you would have played this. Shove on the flop like I did? Smaller raise? I just wonder what happens the times when he has QK or AQ. I don't want to lose value against these hands....in other words, I want the optimal strategy that works against flush draws, top pairs, straight draws, and sets....you know, the optimal play against his range. HELP!?

So, it turns out the Cardrunners HH tool blows. I spent all the time loading them into the stupid converter and then pasting them into my blog entry, only to find when I saved it, the hand images don't show up in the body of the entry. So, lots of time wasted, and I'm back to the old fasioned way. If you want to see the first attempt, it's the very next entry below this one, all the hand histories are missing useful hand information. Maybe I blow, and it's not Cardrunners' fault. If anyone knows what I'm doing wrong, lemme know.

This session started off nearly suicidal, as within the first 400 hands I was down about 3.5 buyins courtesy of the following hands (and others).

I'm actually thinking about this in hindsight and how it was sorta loose/spewy. Not a huge fan of getting it all in here. It's probably not a huge mistake, but certainly not a clear winning play either.

This almost made me vomit, especially after suffering the first two beats. I was definitely thinking at this point that life was over and I should just KMS. But then courtesy of two sweet suckouts (to be pasted shortly) and a shitload of cold decks / donk stackoffs, I rebounded and rebounded strong. First the suckouts.

Prob a bad call against his range here, but I was getting frustrated. On the turn, I bet the "A" thinking that it was a scary card and if he had a set, he would have check-raised on this drawy board. When he check raises all in, I gotta know the overcards aren't ever outs, so I really only have flush draw outs. But, it worked out and I got lucky here. Sweet.

This was probably my least favorite hand of the night. I was definitely frustrated (I think this hand actually came before the last hand) and effed it up on all streets. His little baby raise preflop is definitely a donktell for AA, and it should have slowed me down. In my defense, the money was getting in there on the flop if I just call and see what develops. However, it's not an excuse and this type of behavior will definitely lose money in the long run. (Oh and also in my defense, it was button vs. blinds which reduces hand requirements as we all know).

So, after these two hands I got a bunch of set vs. overpair, overpair vs. top pair, straight vs. pair, and most of them held up. Nothing really interesting worth pasting. However, after getting up about 5 buyins, I started getting a little spewy with some unnecessary situations...i.e. calling rr OOP pf with pocket pairs, check raising with air thinking i was superman, defending in the blinds with weird suited connector crap that isn't profitable, etc. This is interesting to me because I remember sbrugby talking about how this was one of the leaks he was looking to address....this "invincible" syndrome of getting goofy after you're up. So, I'll be on the lookout for this leak in the future.

There were two other hands worth posting (one for humor, the other cuz I'm a badass) before we get to results. First the badass one....

So, it appears as though "oh, this guy flopped the nuts, we shouldn't applaud him for stacking the other dude." However, you will see why I am a stud. The only way I can see the money getting all in here is to bait him with what appears to be a blocking bet with a jack or two pair type holding. He's gotta be sorta scared of the flush, so if I bet out pot or so, I'm sure he'll just flat call. Also, if I check raise all in, I think he will be more likely to fold. This little bet was the perfect little nuance bet to get this guy pot committed to calling my shove. Obvi I'm not worried about the flush either, if he has that, gg gimme the gun (prob what he is thinking). So, yea, def got lucky to cold deck him here, but also stacked him like a champ. VERY PROUD OF THIS HAND, but it's sorta the only one of the session that I feel this way about.

The more I think about this hand, the more I think I should have just called. I'm torn between the great pot odds / not seeing what hand he would play this way and realizing that he thinks he has 0% fold equity. I just can't see a hand he plays this way that doesn't have me beat. So, thoughts are welcome!

So, to wrap up the session with numbers, I played 3,003 hands and made $236.80. I played for just about 2 hours on the nose, and made 825 FTP FPP's as well as paid $113.15 in rake, so there are some additional profits there. So, I've got over 5,356 hands at .25 .50 while 12 to 16 tabling. I'll paste the stats bar here for the combined sessions....

Ok wow....still trying to figure out this print screen thing. I have successfully moved the print screen shot into paint and copied the right part of the selection, but now Cardrunners won't let me paste the shit into the body here. So, one more manual copy of figures until I master this business tomorrow.

VPIP: 19.06

PF raise: 15.70

Amount won: $325.40

BB/100 hands: 6.08 (don't know if this is the 1x or 2x big blind setting, maybe danneman can advise)

Won at SD: 60.48

PFaf: 3.83

Flopaf: 7.20

Turnaf: 3.26

I'm actually thinking about this in hindsight and how it was sorta loose/spewy. Not a huge fan of getting it all in here. It's probably not a huge mistake, but certainly not a clear winning play either.

This almost made me vomit, especially after suffering the first two beats. I was definitely thinking at this point that life was over and I should just KMS.

First blog!

After getting very angry last night and vowing to quit this game forever (as I do at least once a month), I did the usual return home and multi-table the shit out of baby limits. I went even further tonight and played 13 tables of .25 .50. Things started off hot as I jumped out to being up about $150 within 500 hands, but then cooled off very quickly as they always seem to do. In the end, I played 2,353 hands and netted +$88.60. ALSO REALIZED THAT I EARN ABOUT 450 FTP FPP's an hour this way and paid $105.90 in rake (should get about 30 bucks of this back), so OBVI the sesh was worth it! Played for 2 hours and 20 ish minutes. I guess making 40 dollars an hour would be ok if it keeps up. Certainly a reasonable thing to do for a while to rebuild a bankroll and get back to respectable limits. Also, at 450 FPP's/hr., I can expect that new LCD tv in....uhhh.... (200,000/450)=444.44 hours! That means I only have to play an average of two hours a day for the next 220 days and I'll be watching new tv by Christmas.

There were a number of interesting hands that came up, some bad, some good, one AWESOME. Here are the HH's of a few:

This hand is interesting to me, mainly because of the timing tells that you wouldn't necessarily notice. One of my least favorite things in the world is to get min-raised, so I'm trying to differentiate between the harmless min-raise and the "get the eff outta here, i've got the nuts" min-raise. Here, the dude min raised very quickly. This to me is more indicative of the former strategy, rather than the latter. So, I three bet with the intention of folding to a shove. When he just called, I put him on a draw and was pushing any non-club turn. It worked this time, I'll keep my eyes out for more examples of this one way or the other!

Some might call this a suckout from my perspective, others might call it a suckout from mine. Either way, this is a situation that plagues me often. I know I'm good on the flop, a scare card comes, and I don't know whether to bet or check. I don't like checking because if he has A x with x of hearts, then I've allowed him to catch up for free. If he has the flush, then I'm drawing slim. I guess if stacks are deep I like betting and folding to a shove/check-raise, and if stacks are short like this situation, a check doesn't hurt that badly because even if he sucks out, his implied odds are small. So, maybe I should check the turn here and re-evaluate on the river? Who knows....thoughts?

This was my favorite hand of the night. I'm very proud of this play, and it was a big momentum booster that allowed me to right the ship when things were starting to go south. I went with the read that someone with a "J" does not bet this turn, so he either was call bluffing me with a marginal hand, or had the nuts. I think the odds he's call bluffing are better, so I decide to go for the checkraise all in, thinking the hand is good more than it's bad. I was right and it played out exactly how I envisioned!

OMG h8 da minraise. Easy fold on the river I suppose, but what does that mean? I'm calling on the turn hoping for a 2-outer? Not sure this was played correctly at any time, but he made two really lame tiny bets that make it hard to play against. I suppose the one time I flop a straight and clean him out will reconcile all these weird situations.

OK, so here's my first blog entry ever! Things definitely could have gone much better this session, I had a number of suckouts, lost coinflips, cold decks that caused me to lose a number of buyins and like, 0 of the reverse situations. Some people (Dan) won't believe me, but maybe now that I'm writing a blog and will document and discuss these things, you'll have to believe me!

On the comeback trail....hopefully. GG Melatonin

OMG almost forgot stats bar for this session.

WTF won't let me print screen. Gonna have to troubleshoot this later, here are basics.

PFr: 17.17
