Let the summer grind begin

Blog by : gi0

So here we go kids. summer time in Blacksburg, VA. All of the tech kids have gone home for the summer and were here grinding it out. I'm really excited to have this time to just relax and be pretty degenerate with poker before my real 9 to 5 starts in a month or so. I think its going to be good for me and hopefully i will learn a lot and even pull down some decent bank. As i said in my last post its TeamWispy, g0lfa, and me set up in my apt. It's looking even more like mission control in here then it did last year as we have three desks in the living room with LCDs everywhere. Not amazing super baller status, but still kinda fun and pretty cool we think.

As for poker i've been breaking even over my last two big MTT sessions this week but am up a bit playing 50nl. My good friend Vinny VT is teaching me cash and im starting to get the hang of it better. I've played a total of 6k hands over the last 3 weeks or so and im running about 5bb/100 which is very good. Vinny explained to me today though that i shouldnt focus too much on those stats yet as i am working with a small sample size and one good session can swing those stats a decent amount. Got deep in the $10 20k on start tonight but made a redic/awful shove with 4 limps to me in the BB with KTo. I think i shoved like 18bbs effective and one of the overlimpers somehow 6th leveled me by going into the tank and then calling off 18bbs with AA. cashed in the FTP 50/50 tonight which was nice but only made the first payout level. I have gotten deep in 3 20/180s over the last two sessions with a 5th place finish being my best result. this is very unlike me and also very disappointing but just gotta keep on the grind with those things and the results will come. I think im about to play a 50nl session, see ya'll later.

College = Over

Blog by : gi0

So im officially done with college. I ended up doing well on most of my finals and staying on track grades wise. nothin spectacular really for a GPA this semester but i think i should be around a 3.0 which wont help/hurt my overall much at all. Feels pretty weird to be all finished up with undergrad but at the same time its kind of anticlimactic. Graduation is this weekend, we have a ceremony in Lane stadium on friday night for all graduating seniors and then we have a college specific one for business graduates in Cassell on saturday morning at 8am, sigh. Kinda ironic how the earliest ive been up for anything this semester will be for my graduation. The family is coming down tomorrow so it will be good to hang out with them for a few days. I think were going out to dinner tomorrow night and then saturday were going to my roommates party near Roanoke.

After all the graduation stuff is over and done with i will be hanging around here for a month or so. My friends g0lfa and teamwispy are going to be setting up shop in this apt so we can rock out with like 6 lcds in the living room. g0lfa and i did this last year and it was super fun just to play like 12 hr sessions with the comfort of being in a "poker office" like environment. He's been doing real well lately so hopefully we will both have some nice scores coming this summer. I have been playing some cash lately as well with guidance from C/R and my good friend Vinny VT. I play mostly 50nl 6max with a few HU sessions in there once in a while. I have done okay over my first 4k hands winning over 3bb/100 but i hope this improves as i learn the game more and more. Its really interesting how different it is playing cash after playing sngs and mtts for 2 years. More than anything i love the decreased levels of stress playing 6max provides me. I can sit for an hour or two and just stand up from my tables if people are going out or grabbin food. I also want to gain some decent foundation in cash because if i want to play next year while im working i will most likely have to play cash during the week and play MTTs on the weekends due to other time commitments i am going to have.

This post is super long so I'll cut it off here. Keep reading as I'm defiantly making it a goal of mine to keep these posts on a regular schedule.

My MTT Quest

Blog by : gi0

Relativly new account here on C/R so i figured i would spend a little time blogging about my poker and life status.

First a little background. I was born and raised in the Binghamton, NY area where i lived my whole life until attending college. I am a senior marketing major at Virginia Tech and will be graduating in May. Upon graduation i plan on moving back to upstate NY where i will be working with a small consulting firm. Really intereseted in buisness and plan on one day running my own successful company.

As for poker, i started playing the same way that far too many people started playing... after watching Rounders. One of my best friends was already kind of into it and he explained the basic rules to me. A few of started gathering to play home games a few times a week. This all was happeneing when i was in about 10th grade (2002). While in HS poker was just somthing fun to do on the side of my other bigger hobbies such as cars (1970 GTO, shes my baby) or dirt bikes.

Once i got into Tech thing got a little more serious for me. I put my first and only deposit ever online at AP ($50) that spring and my buddies and i were playing games on our hall almost every night. I bought some books and started reading to get a basic grasp on the game. This kinda were static for a few yrs after that. playing mostly $5-10 1 table sngs with the occasional two table sng. My account never really got over $150 and i switched over to stars.

The winter break of my sophmore year i had my first breakout win in a live tourney at Turning Stone. A 3-way chop in the weekly tuesday bounty scored me $1,400, an insane amount of money for me at the time. Since then i've kinda had the bug. I played much more Jr year and took down a few $20 180s cashing out most of my winnings almost immediatly. I have always been a BR nit and didnt want to play in anything above my comfort level so i kept to the <$20 sngs.

Spring of my Jr year i really started getting into poker. I found P5's and some of my buddies were now pretty serious online players. I kinda bounced around for a few months with different types sngs/mtts/cash and wasnt really sure what i wanted to focus on. Last summer after i have seen moderatly good results on stars i decided it would be fun to live in Blacksburg for the summer and just see if i could live off poker. One of my friends also wanted in so we went at it. I settled on $4/180s as my bread and butter however things became tight financailly and i ended up getting a last min job at Cold Stone (worst job ever btw). As summer progressed i started winning more in the 180s and towards the end of summer i decided that the job had to go.

Sr year begins and i kinda make the decision that i want to crush 4/180s and move up to 20/180s and MTTs. My results were good and things progressed as i had hoped. I started spending time on 2+2 and a "rival site" to gain an understanding of valuable concepts. HoH did wonders for my game as well which i feel 95% of the ppl who read it will say.

gotta jet right now, class just ended but i'll fnish up later
