FCK?!

One really can't force one's luck in poker

I mostly followed the guidelines I put up in my first blog and in addition practiced good table selection.

The results?
-$38.30 in 282 hands

I know, I know... The sample size is waaaaay too small, be glad to have gotten the money in good/be playing against such donks, variance is part of the game, look at the long run but still!!!!!!!!!!!!! FCK!
I basically had two large losing hands:

1) UTG was tilting like crazy, I got it in with 80% equity on the flop, by the river he had a fullhouse.

2)UTG SSS limps, I raise AA from BT, AI on the turn w/ 84.1% equity and lost.

No problem

I must say up until now I really like blogging and it seems to do the trick. I stopped playing after the 2nd beat because I felt I was losing it. Now I'll take a break, clean up my room while listening to some music and play another fresh session after the Germany-South Africa friendly game.

Plus, writing down the badbeats and looking at the EV made it 100% clear that I really shouldn't be upset about my last session but look forward to dominating NL50 like I know I can. Most of the time this wouldn't bother me at all but having started September with a downswing this is exactly how more or less major poker meltdowns began in the past.

On a totally different note: I saw The Prestige yesterday and it once again reminded me that Christian Bale is one of my favourite actors. Harsh Times (2005) and especially The Equilibrium (2002) might be some a little less known movies of his that I can recommend highly.

Cheers,
Eric

From TILT to NL200

Just in case

Who knows somebody out there might eventually stumble upon my blog and actually read a sentence or two. So I am going to introduce myself briefly:

My name is Eric and I am 23 years old. Next to spending my time playing poker and soccer, following the NBA and cooking, I will graduate (hopefully) with an MA in History from the University of Zurich by November 2010. That should be enough boring stuff about me for now...

Why Blog?

After playing poker for several (3+) years and taking it more seriously for about half a year NL50 simply can't be the endgame. More acutely I noticed that the same problems seem to prevent me from playing NL100 and beyond over and over again:

  • not studying poker seriously enough (reviewing hand histories, watching videos etc.)
  • strange forms of tilt (NOT CONCENTRATING WHILE PLAYING, trying to gain back losses asap by playing to loose, starting to play HU or PLO to confuse me)
  • no clear goal
  • ...

After two very helpful coaching sessions with BrendanK at the end of July I only managed to play about 11k hands @NL50 because of three weeks of vacation and a family reunion in September. Still my results very pretty sweet: up almost 10 BIs and 4.84 BB/100.

My August Stats

Feeling confident in my game and preparing for another (the third?) shot at NL100 in the near future this happened:

My September Stats

Lessons learned?!

I'm not in the mood to think about the reasons for this "downswing" right now (I think I know them) but want to formulate some guidelines for the future:

  1. CONCENTRATE while playing (4 SH tables, taking notes, not surfing, not watching Entourage, not listening to podcasts)
  2. Stick to NL SH.
  3. Only play when my mind is free for poker/free my mind before playing poker.
  4. Play multiple short sessions (~1h)
  5. Stop losses at 3BI per day (move down)
  6. REVIEW my sessions.
  7. WATCH at least 3 CR videos per week.
  8. Continue getting coaching from BrendanK.

My 4k BR is large enough for NL100 but my game and state of mind isn't right now. My goal for this year stakewise is to be playing NL100 comfortably until the end of 2009. My midterm goal is to reach NL100 and perhaps focus on HU.

Cheers,
Eric

Happy times!

So, during the last two months I didn't have as much time to invest in poker as I wished but I really had a great summer with my family and friends in Maine (any Mainiacs here?) and really am enjoying working on my 200 page long MA paper with a college of mine. The topic is the "Rise and Fall of the Swiss Embroidery Industry" between 1865 and 1935. Might sound boring but it isn't.

Poker wise I haven't had the success I wished for and will have to postpone my move to NL100 for another 4-6 weeks. In the long run I'm sure that wouldn't make a difference. I am confident in my game at the moment and feel I'm getting better at dealing with tilt and so on. Although I thought about shortstacking after listening to the recent 2+2 poker podcast (#88) with Imsakidd as guest. I might try to play 8 tables shortstacked during my next downswing. I never really felt this was an option for me because it would be boring but for a limited time I can see a couple of advantages:

  • Imsakidd stated that the swings/variance is lower. Losing and winning that is.
  • Rakeback should increase due to playing more tables (=slightly higher steady income).
  • The potential for tilt should be less because losing 20BB just doesn't have the same effect as losing an entire stack.
  • The play against Regs changes totally.
  • My image might improve because Regs will have me peeked as a shortstacking donk for a long time.
  • It might help rebuild lost confidence
  • ...

Any opinions about this idea? I'm not sure I'll really pull through with this but it seems like a reasonable alternative during a downswing.

Last weekend I went on a two day hike in the Swiss alps (Greinaebene). It was the first time I stayed overnight in a relatively small alpine hut in between days and the entire experience (-the getting up early) was fabulous. Here are a couple of pictures I took:

P.S. I can really recommend the movie "Brothers Bloom".
