Hey guys, it's 5am and I can't sleep so I figured I'd write a blog. For some reason over the last few weeks I haven't been able to sleep at all. I'm probably averaging 5hrs a night without napping during the day. I'm not sure exactly why this has been going on but it's likely been some subconscious stress related stuff that I don't care to get into but should hopefully pass soon.I'll give a quick update of what I've been up to since last blog.
I flew to Vegas and played the Main Event. This was the only event of the wsop I played and it didn't go well to say the least. To begin with, I had an aweful table draw. Everyone was in their 20's and I would guess that one guy at the table on my day 1 draw wasn't a pro. I lost roughly 1/2 my starting stack all in vs shorty with KK vs his AK. One orbit later picked up KK, raised late and got 3b by button. I thought he was weak so just called only to have him barrel flop and turn on A hi flop. I showed and folded and he was nice enough to table AK (should have gone broke pre obv).. I chipped back up to 30k playing fairly active but not getting out of line at all. Then get QQ in vs JJ and lose 1/2 my stack again vs same short guy. It was the first time I actually felt really tilted live (not that I played tilted). Once again I was able to chip back up to about 35k flopping well twice in 3b pots with AK and AQ. Got into another spot where I had to annoyingly fold AK from blinds to a 3b after utg raised..Then came the dagger when I ck raised all in on the turn with 55 on a 6582 board in a 3b pot only to find out I had one out vs 66 and was out at 10pm. I played some PLo which didn't go great either. Was forced to fold 101033 on a board that ran out Qc 4c 8h 10c 4h where I got ck potted into in 3 way hand on river. Got it in for 2500 with 60% on flop ran it twice and he smashed on both. Luckily made an overset to mitigate my losses to less than 1k in that cash game though. Online has gone really well in what little I have played this month so I'm pretty happy about that.
So I tilt left Vegas early and headed out to Indio, Ca. I made an offer on a short sale house that was accepted by the seller and Im waiting to hear from the banks approval. Im pretty excited about this because it should show roughly a 20%-22% return if I can keep it occupied 90% of the time (not including any possibility of future appreciation). The other purpose of this trip was to visit one of my best friends whom I've known for over 20 years named Dan. I spent a few days in his office learning about lightbulbs and fixtures. He is a lightbulb vendor and owns a startup called Prioritylighting.com I plan to spend my mornings helping him develop accounts while continuing to play poker in the afternoons for supplemental income. In the few days I spent there, I learned so much about business and maintaining relationships. I'm really happy to be branching out from poker and having other projects on the side. I also realize now that I've been playing so much less that I really do enjoy the game when I do get the chance to play. One of the reasons why I felt so unhappy during 2011 was that I was playing so much poker and not really doing anything else. This year I started training muay thai, playing less poker, and balancing my life with other hobbies and ventures. I guess what spurred this thought is that I just read Phil Galfond's blog about being a pro poker player.
Anyways the sun is coming up and the surf has been really good last few days so I have to go. Hope everyone's doing well!
