Killing 50NL

Blog by : bigred

Bankroll = $1,379.44

Since I moved up I'm up $587 in just under 10k hands. I feel really good about my game at the moment and just want to keep winning.

I've got a coaching session tomorrow and also want to watch the recent live session videos by Nutedawg and Vitalmyth as well as the "So you've been raised" series by Citizenwind. The Citizenwind series I have watched before but I want to refresh myself on the principles since a lot of the times I feel lost are when facing a raise post flop.

I've got about $300 in bonuses coming in the next weekish, so hopefully I can keep playing well and be ready to take shots at 100NL soon.

Best of luck everyone.

Early Shot at 50NL

Blog by : bigred

Bankroll = $1093.29

I've been feeling really good about my game recently and decided to take a shot at 50NL with $900. While that BRM is a little bit loose, I've got my fulltilt iron man bonus coming mid-January and thus figured being a bit aggressive was ok.

So far, in 1410 hands I'm up $190.40. I went down $110 in the first 150 hands so my 3 buyin shot almost ended really quickly. I kept playing well despite running badly in all-ins and really turned it around.

Hope everyone's having a good holidays!

Stringing Some Wins Together

Blog by : bigred

Bankroll = $853.43

Not much to say other than that I've booked wins my last couple days and brought December back to break even (including rakeback) despite a $950 downswing between 25nl and 50nl. Hopefully I can keep this run going and be back at 50nl within the next few days.

I just finished watching jcl's new high stakes video and it was awesome. Here's to improving a shit load in '10. I'll post some goals tomorrow.

Happy new year everyone!

Spazz Value

Blog by : bigred

Bankroll = $793.89

I was really happy with how I played today. I ran pretty terribly but by game selecting well and I don't think I made any big mistakes in a little over 1100 hands which I am proud of.

I recently watched Citizenwind's most recent video and he talks about spazz value. I'm adding this to my list of things to focus on since it something I've recently been ignoring. Here's a hand where I certainly could be beat but I think my line encourages villain to bluff as much as possible:

weaktight.com/1840154

Here's another hand where I think my small turn donk caused my opponent to spazz on the river:

weaktight.com/1840163

I'm not too far away from being able to take another shot at 50nl and hope to get there soon. Between now and the new year, however, I won't have much time to play. Regardless, hopefully I can keep the good run going.

Things I Need to Remember

Blog by : bigred

Bankroll = 740.03

I went through my HEM this morning paying particular attention to big loosing hands from the last week and made the following notes:

To Remember:
- Draws have non-fold equity
- I can't rep many random draws in 3 bet pots
- Fish don't overbet bluff
- Steal more in limped pots

I then played some hands and finished up 5 buyins which was quite nice.

Fold I am proud of:
weaktight.com/1837752

Here I checked the flop expecting one of the two villains to take a stab (Their Agg Frequencies were 34% and 50%), but I knew if the UTG player bet big I was in trouble. He had bet/folded a few times since he sat down but they were all smallish bets. Combine this with the fact that the button called and I would be playing deep, out of position, with one pair, against an aggressive opponent, and I think it was a clear fold.

Making Folds I Am Proud Of

Blog by : bigred
0

Bankroll = 617.35

I had a really weird realization today. Every session I make a number of bluffs, value bets that I am really proud of. I finish the hand and think that my play won me pure reciprocal dollars that my opponent would not have won. I am not sure, in my entire poker career, if I have made such a fold. This is a huge leak and I need to fix it.

Over my last 60k hands between 25nl and 50nl I'm a slight winner despite a 48.8% W$SD. I think I've run pretty badly but that's clearly not the issue. I've missed the point that winning in poker involves both getting more when you are ahead AND losing less when behind.

Looking at how bad some of my calls have been, I'm really impressed with the rest of my game that has allowed me to tread water. My W$WSF is %45.5 which I think reflects how much I have improved at hand reading.

While I don't have that much time to play between now and the new year, every time I do I'm going to focus on folding. All of those spots in the past where I thought to myself, "I hope he doesn't bet because if he does I'm screwed" and then called to see the bad news I knew was there aren't going to happen any more, period.

Facing a Steal

Blog by : bigred
0

Bankroll = $611.68 (I'm going to start posting daily with my BR and at least one question)

Hi everyone,

One situation that came up a number of times in playing today was being in the blinds and facing a raise from a fairly passive player in late position. This is a very common spot where I should have a plan but currently don't.

If you are in the BB and the 30/10 CO with a 20% Att. to Steal what range are you calling (if any) and what range are you 3betting? Also, particularly if you are calling with any range, what is your plan post flop?

Also, here's another hand I was wondering about and think I misplayed:
weaktight.com/1828763

Villain is 20/13 with a 38% Agg. Frequency. My first mistake was cbetting the flop too small, the board is drawy enough that I need to bet $2 instead. I think I'd be fine with not cbetting as well since one of the two players almost certainly hit this board.

When the CO calls I think his range is 44,56dd, 67dd, 78dd, 89dd, KQ, KJ, QJ. At the time I also thought he might have some random floats but I think this is wrong since the pot is 3 way and since I've never seen him float before it's dumb to just assume that he is.

With this range the turn is really not as good a card as it seems. We are now only ahead of KQ and KJ (and floats if there are any in his range). As such I think I should c/f. While betting probably gets one street of value out of KQ and KJ, we lost that bet more than half of the time when he has us beat and raises. Thoughts?

$1,000 Bankroll!

Blog by : bigred
0

Hi everyone,

It's been just over a month since I started coaching and in that time I'm up $500 and my bankroll just hit $1k. Here are a couple semi-brag pictures:

weaktight.com/1727103
Here's one hand I was wondering about. Villain is 20/18 with a 44% Steal and a 14% aggression frequency in 60 hands. I 3bet JT in pos and flop top pair. I'm really unsure about how to play this post flop after flopping top pair. I feel like betting the flop folds out most hands that we beat but I decided to do so anyway to protect against overs and any draws. On the turn I decided to bet 6.50 into 12.5 hoping to get to a cheap(ish) showdown and hopefully beat 88-TT or missed draws. I was planning on folding to a raise at any point since villain was so passive. Any thoughts on my play would be very welcome.

This is a common spot I get in where I 3bet as a bluff and make a marginal hand. I'm also not sure when, if ever, I should be double barrelling as a bluff in 3bet pots.

I've got my next coaching session with SGB5000 tomorow and I'm really excited to keep progressing. I need to keep focusing on folding more and trusting my reads.

I'm going to take a 3 buyin shot at 50nl and hopefully it goes well.

Best of luck everyone.

Need to pull out of this downswing

Blog by : bigred
0

I've lost the last 6 days in a row. I think I've been playing as well as ever but not getting the cards. I'm still making mistakes though and I really need to clean it up. This morning was the worst session I've played in some time. I finished down $43 and made a bunch of bad calls that I think were a product of just playing too fast. I've gotta take a deep breath before every big decision and make sure I make the right one.

My downswing is at $400 and I'm committed to ending it here. Luckily, including rakeback I'm only down $63 since I started coaching so nothing crippling. Suck to put in 12k hands and be down money but I'm ready to move on and get back to crushing. I'm very much looking forward to my next session with SGB5000.

Update and Some Hands

Blog by : bigred
0

Overall I'm up $241 (excluding rake back) in 5k hands since I've started being coached. Things are going really well and I'm just trying to put in as much volume as possible. I want to work on bet sizing with SGB5000 at some point because thats somewhere I deffinitely feel lost, but in general I feel quite solid at the tables.

Here are a couple of bluffs gone wrong and my rationale behind them:

weaktight.com/1635804
Here Villain is new at the table so I have no reads. (Turns out he is a loose passive fish so I shouldn't be bluffing him...). When he donks the flop, I think his range could be really wide so I raise expecting to get alot of folds. When he calls I put him on a T, a 7, 66, 88, 99, 56, maybe a set or two pair, maybe a flush draw. I think he probably doesn't have a flush draw though, because almost any flush draw also has at least one over card so I think if he donked with it, he'd 3bet and get it in. (I think I'm passing to much judgement on an unknown).

The Q turn completes the flush and I think is a terrible card for all of his one pair hands (which I think are the majority of his range). It also hits my range which deffinitely contains overcards and a big flushdraw. I decide to barrel planning to bet again on any river. I'm betting the river too because I think a T, 88 or 99 will probably call once but fold on the river (espesially if his pocket pair has a spade).

The river 3 isn't great because he could deffinitely have 56 but I decide to stick with my plan and bet again. Turns out he had T9 and called me down. This clearly shows why I shouldn't bluff unknowns but I think against a solid player my line is good and will work most of the time.

I think the bluff would be more successful if the turn was an offsuit Q and the river was a total blank like a 2. This is because contrary to what I've said above, without history we don't know that he plays draws aggressively and thus could have a flush draw. This play did however help me develop an image and showed me that I can valuebet very light against this villain so I guess its not terrible.

weaktight.com/1635821
Here Villain is 25/18 with a 21% Agg Freq. and a 36% attempt to steal. My 3bet is pretty light but I've got an A and with his 36% steal, his range is really wide so I think its fine. When he calls my 3bet I think his range is pocket pairs, AK and AQ. On that flop he can play a big pot with none of his hands except JJ (which might 3bet) and 22 (which probably wouldn't call). Because of this I'm cbetting with the intention of double barreling any turn. A hand like 88 might call once but a solid opponent isn't getting it in on this board with a middle pocket pair. I'm not sure if this makes sense but my cbet is small because I'm trying to get a small bet out of his middle pairs before making them fold the turn.

The turn is the 9d which is the third card to a flush. I'm not sure how the flush draw changes the dynamic but after I bet i realised that a hand like 88d might be more likely to call now that it has outs against AsAc or equivelent.

When the river puts a 4th diamond I really don't know what to do. I think shoving the river is fine if I think villain would call twice with 88d but fold the river but I don't know how realistic that is. I deffinitely like my flop and turn play but I'm not sure if firing the river is just spew. If it is, I'm wondering if there are any rivers that are good to fire again here. If not, maybe I should have bet bigger on the turn to make sure I fold out small pairs. Also, I feel like betting smaller on the turn to have more behind on the river shove could be better too. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Luc
