My 3rd or 4th best month ever and a business venture away from poker.

Well February was a pretty awesome month. I turned 25, bought a house, and ran pretty well. Poker wise it was kind of the opposite of January as far as swings are concerned. January started off crappy, then I hit a heater, and ended in pretty uneventful fashion but still with good results. February on the other hand started off with a heater, then came a 25 buy in downswing(luckily it was almost all 2/4 and not 3/6). However I then managed to bink a 30+ buy in upswing in a 24 hour period, followed by some more run good to wrap up the month.

I'm very happy with my overall results for the month and even more pleased with my volume. I've been 12 tabling all month on a 28" monitor I bought near the end of January based on a recomendation from a student. So due to that fact, I was able to get in ~68k hands mostly at 2/4 and 3/6 even with taking 6 days completely off for the month and 3 days where I put in very little play as well. I wrapped up the month with a solid 6.5bb/100 winrate which I'm very very pleased with considering how many tables I'm playing. For March I'm probably going to be looking into taking some shots at 5/10 if I see some good games and hopefully will continue the theme of good play for the year.

Here is a HEM screen shot for the month.

Money mouth

As for the business venture, you may or may not know that I am also completely obsessed with golf. I have been working with this instructor I know on my own game off and on ever since I moved to Atlanta. He is a pretty big time instructor, works with pga tour/mini tour/elite junior players. Anyway he has been trying to start this junior golf academy for a while now and needs someone to help him get it off the ground. With poker legislation in the United States basically up in the air and nobody really knowing what is going to happen, I'm not too excited about wondering what is going to happen next with my "job". I also don't really want to pass on this opportunity as golf is really a passion of mine.

Basically the problem my instructor is running into is that he doesn't have enough time in the day to handle all the requests he gets, especially from junior players. During the golf season high school doesnt get out until around 3-4PM around here so he has from 4-7 to give lessons. Well that is only 3 hours and he has like 8-10 kids that are trying to get lessons from him. He has also effectively priced himself out of offering lessons to kids younger kids(he charges $150/hr) but he would like to tap into that niche of kids without taking a huge pay cut. So basically the general gameplan is to start a junior academy where parents will pay a monthly membership fee based on how often there child would like to come to supervised practice sessions.

There are 3 different levels, correlating with whether you are in elementary school, middle school, highschool. Obviously the 3 levels will be vastly different with the elementary schoolers just focusing on learning the game and developing a passion for it. The high schoolers will in general be more focused on fine tuning their game, preping for tournaments, and getting college scholarships lined up. You will have the chance to come to 1,2, or 3 sessions per week.

An example of the most premier package is for the high school kids/elite level. For $700/month the child is able to attend 3 supervised practice sessions per week that each last 90 minutes. In addition to that they will also get to play 1 round of golf per month with one of the instructors of the academy to help us pin point any areas in their game that need more attention. Along with the practice and playing aspect they will receive fitness routines to help them progress as players and mental coaching focused on improving their tournament play. They will also have the ability to ask one of the instructors to join them at a tournament to help them go through their pretournament practice routine and make sure they are ready to perform to the best of their ability. It may seem like a pretty steep price but when you break it down the child is getting over 20 hours of instruction/supervised practice time which boils down to roughly $35/hr. That is the most expensive package though, and we are confident that we are offering enough different packages to fit the needs of tons of children.

Another reason I'm completely fine working on this project is that it will be nowhere near full time hours and I will still have plenty of time to play poker. Not to mention that I think I will be making a pretty good hourly doing another thing that I love. The initial schedule we have come up with calls for 4 days a week on average and about 4 hours on each of those days. I probably spend that much time messing around on the internet every week compared to doing something productive like playing/reviewing poker, working out, playing golf so that dead time won't be missed too badly. I will just have to use my time a bit more efficiently. I'm very excited about the business and we also have a few other ideas that we are working on that could help expand it even further to hopefully include the interwebz!

Anyway I've been ranting long enough. If you are into golf I told my instructor about the Golf forum over on 2+2. He basically dove head first in and is offering a ton of free advice. His sn over there is "dagolfdoc" so If you have any golf questions you'd like to ask him head over there.

And i've ranted long enough, talk to you guys later and run good in March!
