"This above all: to thine own self be true" (William Shakespeare)

Shakespeare, among many sages throughout history remind us of the great importance that self-truthfulness has.

I heard this a lot of times: Be truthful with yourself! It's meaning is simple, yet very deep. It implies correctly judging yourself, lack of denial, self-acceptance and integrity.

To be true to thyself demands knowing yourself. Know your values and beliefs and live by them. Have the integrity to act as if under constant spot-light; be your own judge. By making this commitment you put the responsibility on your shoulders only... making room for happiness.

"In the second grade, they asked us what we wanted to be. I said I wanted to be a ball player, and they laughed. In eight grade, they asked the same question, and I said a ball player, and they laughed a little more. By the eleventh grade, no one was laughing." (Johnny Bench, major league catcher)

The reason their laughter didn't get to him is because he believed in himself, had such a strong vision and great will.

I have managed to reach this month's goal by playing 40k hands, most of them at NL100, though...
After gearing down 3 times from NL200 I have concluded that 5 buyins is a little too tight of a drop-down buffer while 6-tabling. For July the drop-down / move up rule will be 6 / 12 BI. Hopefully this will work better!

End of May

"If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right." (Henry Ford)

From now on I will start my entries with a quote I find interesting. I chose this to be the first as is one of my favourites. It all depends on whether you believe in your abilities or not.

I started playing 6max NL exclusively in April 2006, after more than 6 months of "testing the waters", by playing MTTs, SNGs and both fullring and shorthanded cash-games. This is when my so cold "pro" career started. I have been slowly learning the game since then. But my "pro" approach to the game left much to be desired. The average number of hands per month was 7000 in 2006, 11500 in 2007 and 13000 in the first trimester of 2008. The 2 factors that kept me from putting in more hands were my satisfation of the results I had in terms of winrate and my fear of losing (almost a paradox, because my results showed I was a winner).

This year I was taught a lesson: I learned how it is to lose money over a period of several months in a row. This brought me back on Earth, as I was overestimating my skill level, and underestimating variance. Anyone who found himself in my shoes at the end of April had 2 options. One was to quit the game, the other was to play more, to work harder and take it more seriously. Fortunately, I did not chose the first option. I nearly tripled my volume of play (compared to the monthly avg of 2007). Which is something I am satisfied with... for this month.

For June, my target is higher: 40k hands.

Below is the iPoker graph (with the 5 buyin drop-down bandwidth at NL200) and stats (including Prima):

I will not switch to PT3, as it is not stable yet.

Looking forward for June!

Back at NL200

Blog by : INSPIRON

It took me a little over 20K hands at NL100 to get back to NL200, the level I started this month at. The reason for this taking so long is a 13-buyin downswing I experienced in the first 9k hands. The graph shows this in more detail.

I have also played some hands on Prima network in the meantime, making 7 buyins at NL100 along the way.
So I am back at NL200 following the aggressive BR strategy on both sites, although I spend less time playing on Prima.
I can only do my best and hope to reach NL400 without having to step back again at NL100.

Checkpoint

I have been playing NL100 for a few days now, and so far I am going slowly and steadily downwards, with a negative speed of -5 PTBB/100 in a little less than 7k hands. I am a little concerned for the results, but the review of the majority of big pots that I have lost make me a winner... in Sklansky's bucks, at least. :)

I have been 6tabling on average since I dropped to NL100, putting in approx. 300 hands/h. Once I get back to NL200, I will resume 4tabling for the most part. I may be forced to deposit some more for the account's 'cushion' if I lose a couple more buy-ins, but hopefully, I won't.

NL100 - day 2

Blog by : INSPIRON

Woke up at 6'55 AM. Now this is something I like. :)
From now I will try to limit my sessions to 400 hands, as it allows me to quit while still on my A-game most of the time.
Put 400 hands in first session, with a very good result.
Then I put in another session, would have broken even if not for a KK vs AA situation. Went to tennis afterwards.
But in spite of playing good, I ended the day in red, after 1600 hands.

NL100 and TUPAC

There is a lot of 'hidden' wisdom in Tupac's songs. That's why I enjoy listening to him, may he rest in peace!

The message I stress: to make it stop study your lessons

Don't settle for less - even the genius ask-es questions

Be grateful for blessings [...]

Always do your best, don't let the pressure make you panic

And when you get stranded

And things don't go the way you planned it [...]

Remember one thing

Through every dark night, there's a bright day after that

So no matter how hard it get, stick your chest out

Keep your head up, and handle it!

(ME AGAINST THE WORLD, 1995)

The first session this morning was a short 30 minute one, while testing a new (for me) stop-loss AHK script by _dave_ and losing 2 buyins in the test process. :) I stopped, prepared my breakfast, and started another session, with a 3 buyin stop-loss and 400 hands goal.
After another 400 hands, with a good result, I went to gym.
Two more session followed in the afternoon, finishing after 1370 hands down 2 buyins, again :).

Drop to NL100

Blog by : INSPIRON

Today, after 4 hours of play I found myself down 3 buyins. And due to the fact that I dropped 5 buyins from my highest peak point this month ($2600), I have to stick to the strict rule of gearing down to NL100. I will play here until I get back to $2600.

So today's table:

Looking forward to it!

A little Serge King wisdom...

Blog by : INSPIRON
0

Today I re-read a few pages from Mastering Your Hidden Self by Serge Kahili King, and I will reproduce a passage from the Preface of the book:

"[...]self-development means that responsibility for your development lies with yourself. There is no limit as to how far you can go, and there will always be a guide of some kind available at every stage. But each person has to get there on his or her own two feet. There is no one to push you or pull you, coax or cajole you, force you or lead you along. And that's why it's tough."

That book is like that, poker is like that, life is like that. You will always find knowledge that can change you for the better, if you search for it and use it.

Played for 3 hours today, almost 1000 hands, broke around even.

25 Tips

Blog by : INSPIRON
0

A few days ago, while browsing the web, I came across a 30 minute mp3 audio tape recorded by self-help author Dick Sutphen, titled 25 'Tips to Success'. After listening to it, I created a transcript summary / keypoints to embed it. I'll reproduce it here.

Dick Sutphen's 25 Tips to Success

1. You must develop clarity of intent; a clearly defined goal or a strong general direction.
2. Energy (mental and physical) - physical energy comes from lifestyle and lack of stress.
3. Enthusiasm combined with action will hasten success, which comes from doing what you love.
4. Self-image - perceiving yourself as a winner. You will never allow yourself to have what you don't feel worthy of.
5. Self-discipline - how you direct your time, energy and resources.
6. Time is the greatest resource you have.
7. Your vision limits what you can do. You will never succeed beyond the size of your vision.
8. You need an strong emotional purpose that will drive you forward.
9. Don't wait for the ideal time or conditions to put your success plan into action. Chances are that time will never come.
10. Stop worrying about what other people think about what you want to do. If you want to be successful surround yourself with successful people from which you can learn.
11. Balance work and play. Reward yourself for your efforts. Maintain your equilibrium.
12. You create your own reality with your beliefs. If you believe something, it becomes true.
13. Project confidence. Act confident. You will indeed become confident.
14. 80% is possessed, achieved or created by 20% of the people. Increase your efforts to the area of most interest.
15. Leadership. Delegation. You need your time to do what you do best.
16. The longer the lead time you invest in your success, the greater the pay-off. You get what you put in.
17. A helpful mantra: "I will spend each moment doing the most productive thing I can".
18. Uncover the blocks that stand in the way to your success.
19. It is your resistance to what is that causes your suffering. Chose a detached positive view-point.
20. Role models are critical to your success.
21. You are creating your own reality with every thought you have.
22. Be realistic about your goals.
23. Attempt to project the price (time, effort, money or sacrifice) to make sure you are willing to pay it before you begin.
24. Make sure that your goals and values align.
25. Use every mind programming technique available to support your goals.

A week has passed since I've been staying at my parents' house at the countryside. Ever since they moved here, this has been mostly like a sanctuary of piece and tranquility for me. Away from the city, it's truly a place where you can fully recharge your batteries, getting benefit from the fresh air and home-made foods. I always enjoy my staying here.
Today is the last day here. I have to leave in 6 hours. I will spend this time with non-poker activities, as I turns out (after numerous attempts) that I can't focus and play my A game when I have a time constraint.
I played in the morning for a little over 2 hours and put in almost 800 hands with a good result.
