1st Hand $2500 Tourney with JC Tran

Hi All,

I am a brand new member with CR, have been playing poker for just over 1 year and I have an important question. I was recently in a $2500 buy in tournament. The very first hand dealt to me was AQ offsuit in late position. Starting chips were 5000. Blinds were 25-25. I recognized some of the players at my table, some of them I've played with before and one of them I had never played before but have only seen him play on TV and that being J.C. Tran. I was in agressive mode, there were 2 limpers and raised it 250 (yah, 10x's the BB) because I was thinking that some of these guys would not mind to pay that much to see the flop and I didn't mind if I took the pot right there and then. Anyhow, the button calls my 250, JC Tran calls in the BB and 1 limper in early position calls. So it's 4 way to the flop and it comes A, 8, 6 rainbow. Action is checked to me and I decided to bet 1400 (a few hundred over pot). Button folds, JC in the BB calls and the limper in early pos folds. It's now heads up. I remember how agressive JC can be and that he's willing to pay to see cards and play big pots. His call there made me think..... could he also have an A... maybe similar to my AQ but possibly suited, AJ suited. He also could have had wired 8's or 6's. I did not think he had AK or AA. Then turn came a 9s and it made a possible spade flush draw. JC checks to me again... I pondered to check because if I was ahead, I could not have been very far ahead. But when I had bet on the flop, I had portrayed a bet seemed hesitant and unreliable. JC may not have believed I had the A and that may be why he called and was still in the pot. Or if he could have had the AJ of clubs now turned the nut flush draw with top pair... or he had my same hand as AQ then I can possibly try to wrestle the pot away. I bombarded myself with many more thoughts and being fairly new to this hold'em game and the tournaments, my wheels were spinning. Well, I decided to bet 1800 on that turn thinking I would take it down or wrestle away here. I was done betting if he had called but instead he shoved all in for another 1800 to go. I then realized what a donk I was for having committed myself and not even realizing it until his shove. At that point I woke up and figured I was toast and called hoping for a miracle. I did not think he would do that with top pair and nut flush draw since he knew he had no fold equity and his trap was set for me. Well, he had 7, 5 suited clubs and had turned the stone cold nuts. I was drawing dead. Please help to tell me how many million mistakes I had made in this hand. Lucky for me, good luck likes to be on my side and money keeps rushing into me otherwise I'd be homeless. Was my preflop raise t(10x's the BB) too big? Was my overpot bet on the flop too dumb? I could have figured out if anyone had an A or better with a 500 bet and left myself room to get away. But I hate playing scared or weak (and so I guess I'd decided to play dumb!). Should I have checked the turn? Help me understand how dumb and donk I was....please!!!!!!!!! Thank you.
