Pokrparty and Sushi Masterclass

Blog by : ECart
0

{Tried to get a video to work, but couldn't figure it out}

I had made sushi before a few times, but only maki rolls. This was the first time for me making nigiri. It was a lot of fun in general and I feel like I was given some good basic pointers on how to make sushi. I'll definitely be making sushi at home a couple times during the summer. And hopefully get better at it as I LOOOOOOOOVE eating sushi.

If you're interested and live closeish to london. I think Inamo St James runs a couple more in the next few months. For more info check out:

Played some 6m PLO with pokrparty again yesterday. The games that form around him are the most enjoyable 6m PLO games online. I think he's pretty bad, but I still think he's a winner in the games. Mostly because he brings out the worst in people. Deldar is a HUGE fan of pokrparty and thinks he does tons of stuff on purpose for his image. I don't think you do this kind of stuff on purpose though.... this is just bad:

Nonetheless I have a ton of respect for him. There's almost noone like him. Furthermore I have to admit he's a much bigger winner than me in these 6m games while actually being worse at poker than me... which is DAMN impressive :P and I guess you could call it being better at poker, because profit is the way we track results in this game.

Blog Revival

Blog by : ECart
0

At least for now. I'm not sure how long I'll keep it up, but for now expect some updates over the coming weeks.

The reason I didn't update anymore, was because after black friday I had a bunch of stuff going on and went to vegas so I basically didn't play online for 3 months. And I never really blogged again after I came back from vegas.

For the ones wondering how I've done since my last blog update:

Gotta love my volume considering I've played only 9 out of the last 12 months. Working real hard, but besides running bad I feel like I could be playing way better aswell. It's not much fun running bad for > a year and it's definitely affected my play, especially considering I ran terrible for a big part of 2010 aswell as you can see in previous blog entries. Trying to do my best to play my best, but I was definitely playing better a year ago before vegas. Which isn't too encouraging either getting worse....

Oh well at least fitness is going amazing and I'm in amazing shape. I was ~67KG before I went to vegas last year, then ~75KG after due to having little gym access(hard to get around without driver's license) and eating unhealthy in vegas. Then after vegas I hit the gym hard 6x2 hours per week and went up to 89KG around christmas. Gotten pretty fat too, but gained a lot of muscle mass aswell. And now since christmas I've lost >15KG and I'm down to 73ish KG. I'll probably keep cutting for another month or so and then switch back to some sort of other program. I'm thinking maybe muscle building, but I'd ideally kinda like to do some olympic movements and just increase overall strength/power/explosiveness and train for increased atheletic performance.

www.workoutbox.com for the best fitness programs out there!!! It's run by an ex-poker player with a master's degree in exercise science and sports nutrition. I extremely highly recommend it.

March Update

Blog by : ECart
0

March marked the end of my sick january and february heater. I didn't run very well. Started off very swingy and ended up losing a decent bit. Especially a 50/100 4table session vs paula35 was very gross somewhere in the middle of the month as I knew I had a big edge, just ran horrendously. Have moved down a bit since then for a couple of reasons and am planning on playing somewhat more 6m PLO as I've been wanting to sharpen my skills there and finally finish Tom Chambers' awesome PLO book.

Still up quite a bit for the year though and am happy with where I'm at.

February update

Blog by : ECart
0

I ran pretty hot in January and February was almost no different. Won a bit more and played a TON of PLO(80% of hands were PLO). Definitely ran superhot. I feel like I'm getting better at PLO, but there's still SOSO much to learn, so I'm still working hard to improve my PLO game.

PLO's a SICK SICK swingy game though. Especially vs some opponents you get deep really quickly and when you do variance just gets out of hand. So I've sharpened up my PLO BR requirements even more.

Also saw Black Swan and The King's Speech. Black Swan was definitely pretty awesome and easily worth a 2nd watch, because it's a fairly complicated movie.

The King Speech on the other hand was very disappointing, it wasn't bad, but after all the hype I expected a LOT more. It was an above average movie for me, but not a great movie. The acting was definitely great and the roles were hard for sure, but the story was very shallow imo.

2011 so far

Blog by : ECart
0

2011 so far is pretty kick-ass. Talking about kick-ass, it's a damn shame it didn't even get 1 oscar nomination. I've now lost all my respect for the oscars.

Anyway, 2011 is kick-ass. Have run insanely hot at PLO, can't say the same for NLHE, but overall running pretty well I reckon. It's weird how I never seem to run normal for a while, but always have either a lot of luck or a lot of bad luck.

After today I've also officially recovered from my downswing that started mid-may 2010, so that's pretty sweet. Last but not least I'll soon reach 1Million hands played in my database which goes back to september 2008, when I moved from 6max to HU. Only about 5k hands to go, so I'll likely reach that somewhere during the next week. Maybe even over the weekend.

Also, Tron: Legacy was AWESOME :). Easily the best movie of 2011 thusfar. Probably gonna make my top 5 when the year's over, maybe top 3.

Frank.

2010 Graphs

Blog by : ECart
0

As i've done for the last year, I don't share my exact results anymore except for with a few select people like parents and a few pokerfriends. Thought I should still do some sort of 2010 Blog Update though, so here goes:

Here's the graph with EV and showdown winnings:

I didn't play at all in January, little in February, lots in March - Mid-May. Then at the top of the graph(mid-may) I started playing less volume(less motivated due to running bad). Didn't really play for 3-4 weeks while in London during WSOPE and EPT, after Mid-November at the low point though I started to put in more volume again.
Overall not a ton of hands, but considering circumstances I think I did well.

I also feel like I've improved quite a bit over the year. Especially NLHE I think I've become really great at. PLO could use a lot of work, luckily that's the case for almost every1 in the poker world.
Just gonna continue in 2011 where I left off in 2010. Since 2009 I don't really set any specific goals anymore. 2009 proved that even over the stretch of a year things can go so strangely in poker that specific goals are useless. 2010 proved that it can even be the case over the stretch of 2 years. All I can plan on doing is my best like I've done the last 3 years and to have fun of course.

P.S. For the stats freaks:
-Out of the 361,114 hands, 214,843 were HE and 143,703 were Omaha Hi.
-Out of the 143,703 Omaha Hi hands, 103,338 were HU and out of the 214,843 HE hands, 200,513 were HU.
-Omaha Hi HU Winrates, 1.55 bb/100 and 2.83 EV bb/100.
-HE HU Winrates, 6.74 bb/100 and 9.27 EV bb/100.

Told ya PLO needs work :).

Sigh

Blog by : ECart
0

Somehow what I thought to be impossible has happened. 2010 is turning out to be a worse year than 2009. Looks like I'll probably have 2 breakeven/losing years in a row?

I thought I had actually booked like 1-2 winning weeks at the most since May 18th, but apparently I did okay in June and actually had a slight winning month. It sure as hell feels like I haven't won/been on an upswing since May 18th. Oh actually, looking a little closer. I only played for like 1 week in June and besides that I had 1 minor winning week in September, so it's actually true.

Would be kinda nice to win again for a change. It's been a while. Poker's still interesting, but just not as much fun without it.

The thing that's actually frustrating is that as of late my EV Adjusted graph is also going down a bit. So it's not as easy to just blame it on bad luck as it was before, when I could just like at the difference between my graph and EV graph, puke, feel better and be done with it.
So as of late I've been paying closer attention to my own play, but I'm pretty sure I'm just getting coolered a shitton. It's like, the pots I win I get it in with a monster and somehow they have an insane draw and ~50% equity so I win a flip. And when I lose I get it in in a standard spot, but run into a monster and have like 20-30% on average.
And it's not like I don't run below EV anymore, I still have to deal with that on top of it.

What's also pretty annoying is that I believe I can beat the stakes I play now(3/6 and 5/10) pretty easily aswell as 10/20 and tbh I believe I can beat 25/50 aswell(25/50 results also indicate this). There's enough players that I believe are worse than me playing those games. I can't be certain and especially with the way things are going it's hard to still believe that. Still with the things I've seen, unless I'm missing a bunch of things, I just don't see how it's not true. The best comparison I can think of is comparing it with Starcraft 2(or another strategy game). You don't have perfect information, but you've scouted a couple times(so have an idea of where you're at) and you've won more of the battles, so everything is telling you you should be ahead, but of course you don't have perfect information, so you can't be certain.

I've barely played Starcraft 2 since the first month since it came out, but I have been watching a bunch of matches online, which is pretty fun. If you're interested in watching the best of the best Starcraft 2 players battle it out, check out gomtv.net.

I'll finish of with some good news. I feel like I'm doing really well at everything basically. Doing an even greater job on my workouts as of late and I'm a bit more focussed when playing poker aswell. On top of that my time management has been very very efficient. I barely waste any time browsing useless fora or watching random TV shows I don't really wanna watch anyway. I've been using all my time extremely efficiently.

I'll also likely go to Amsterdam for a couple days not this coming week, but the week after, because the Master Classics of Poker will be going on. Should be fun to meet up with some people and play a little bit of live poker probably.

That's it for now,
Frank.

First week back on the grind

Blog by : ECart

Pretty sick volume at least. I haven't played this much very often, except for on maybe 2 occassions or something. I've played 22k hands which is pretty sweet. Mix of HU NL, HU PLO and 6M PLO.

At first I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to play exactly, played some bums, some 3-4 table HU matches aswell as some 6-12 tabling 6M PLO. I thought I had settled on grinding 6M PLO for a while(it's really really soft), but I think I'm gonna settle on grinding 6M PLO, while also trying to get people to play 3-4 tables HU.

Results weren't very good, but at least I played quite well. Made some mistakes here and there, but especially in my HU PLO matches I feel like I played really well. While I can 12 table 6M PLO, I should stick to 6-9 tables though, because I feel like I play a lot better that way. My style seems to require a lot of focus and it's great when I think everything through, but if I 12table and forget to think about 1 small factor it can cost me a fortune.

Sweet volume though and I think for the first time in my life I reached Platinumstar :).

Frank.

I made a royal flush yesterday :D

WSOPE + EPT London trip report

Blog by : ECart
0

So I've been in London for the past 2.5 weeks or so. I got there on the 17th and when I got to the appartment, Daniel(jungleman) and Scott(urnotindanger) were already there. Luckily they turned out to be great guys whom I didn't mind sharing an appartment with for 2 and a half weeks. We chatted for a few hours and then I went to bed, while they stayed up all night(jetlag).

The next few days, we checked out the Empire casino where the WSOPE was to be held and checked wether their registrations for the 10k HU were in order. We also ¯»¿checked out camden, which was a pretty cool, fun and really big market in london. And we had a really expensive indian dinner with Harrison(ice320, crazygirl89) whom I used to coach and Joe(xblink) on monday. Not the best food I've had for that price, but it was quite good.

On tuesday there was the first real WSOPE event that we got a chance to participate in. Unfortunately it cost 10k pounds and considering my pretty massive downswing, I wouldn't have been able to have more than 25% at the most of myself so I just passed and decided to support Daniel and Scott.
When me and Scott got to the casino, we found Harrison and Daniel talking to Daniel Negreanu. I blinked a couple times to see if it was actually him(first well known poker player I ever met) and then we discussed an interesting hand that Negreanu had played online vs Phil Galfond. After that all the big name pros started showing up for the event. Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow, Phil Ivey etc etc etc. Daniel also introduced himself to durrrr, but durrrr didn't seem to wanna chat. I suppose he's not that fond of one of his worst enemies online. I also met a couple online guys like Andrew Lichtenberger(luckychewy) and Daniel and Max Steinberg(Mirttinur and his twinbrother). And last, but not least Viktor Blom was apparently playing in the event aswell.
Eventually(like 45 minutes late) the draw finally started. Scott had to play Nicholas Wong, some unknown asian guy in the 1st round. Daniel had a worse draw. He drew Andrew Pantling whom we heard was Clockwyze, a high stakes CAP player. While watching their matches, I also met up with another person I used to coach, Nick. He lives in london and had given me a big list with fun stuff to do and great restaurants to check out while in london. We both watched Scott eventually win his match and Daniel had already beaten clockwyze in a crazy hand a while before that, in which clockwyze lead turn and made a nonsense ck/bluffjam on the river on AKx rainbow with a blank turn and river. Daniel snapped him off with a checked back set of Aces.
During the dinnerbreak we got some amazing food at this place called Wagamama. You can eat there within an hour pretty easily and it's pretty cheap, but it's some really really good asian food. If you ever go to london, definitely check this out. It's a chain of restaurants, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one.
After the dinnerbreak Scott unfortunately enough lost his 2nd round to a fairly unknown guy. With a flush to a boat in a 4b pot and Daniel lost his 2nd match to Howard Lederer. After that we rooted for Max Steinberg who was playing aggromaniac Gus Hansen, but he unfortunately enough lost aswell. After that we had a fun night at the casino, getting some drinks and stuff. I stayed out of it(don't see the fun in casino games), but Scott had the sickest run at craps ever. Rolling at least like 6 7s in a row. He also won 1.5k at Blackjack. And Max and Danny(Steinberg) also profitted a decent bit from Scott's run at craps. Daniel decided to go allin everytime at craps and ran up his 100 pounds to about 2k, but eventually when the hot run ended, he lost it all.

Wednesday, we didn't do a whole lot during the day, but in the evening we went to a charity tournament hosted by Victory Poker that Daniel got invited to. It was in a really exclusive place and Scott was way underdressed, luckily the supernice event organizer offered to pay for a cab so he could go change. Right as that happened Phil Ivey walked up to the event organizer and we were introduced to him and shook his hand :).
Later at the charity tournament there were tons of more people like Michael Mizrachi, Andrew Robl, Liv Boeree and a sometimes annoying, but superfunny superdrunk Mike Matusow. I ran superhot in it and was one of the chipleaders untill I ran into another chipleader Sorel Mizzi who knocked me out with his QQ vs my 99 for 50BBs. At that point most people just started going allin randomly, because everyone wanted to go out.
Me, Scott and Daniel went out with Michael Mizrachi. He arranged a table with bottle service at the Whisky Mist, which was a pretty freaking nice place. Later on a ton of other people started showing up from the charity event aswell as some other people, like Hellmuth, Negreanu, Ugotabanana and gordylamb. We all got pretty drunk and I had a blast. I can't even imagine how drunk Matusow must've been at the end of the night.

The next couple of days, Daniel and Scott played the Main Event, but neither made day 2 unfortunately enough. On monday, the 2nd to last day of the Main Event a few other interesting people were still in though. Phil Ivey, Clockwyze, Viktor Blom and Danny(Steinberg) all made it to the final 20 or so. We were rooting pretty hard for Danny to take it down and for Viktor to get 2nd. Unfortunately Viktor eventually lost his stack, but I did get to talk to him for ~a minute though discussing a hand that him and Danny played. Those 2 were easily the most 2 active players and were playing some really craz... eh I mean interesting hands.
What was interesting is that Viktor would under no circumstance do an interview after he busted out. He really doesn't seem to want any of the fame/media attention. He seemed like a really cool/funny/nice guy though during the minute I talked to him. Here's actually Viktor's bustout hand on youtube. You can also see Clockwyze and Danny, aswell as Max, Scott and me supporting Danny from the rail.
The following day Danny got knocked out in 6th :(. Still a sick run and very nice payday though! Congratz!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnGp1AmUEMc
Quality sucks, but:
0:01 - 0:02 in the
grey sweater is Clockwyze
0:05 - 0:45 in the green is Danny
Viktor is the one with the white baseball cap
1:48 - 1:50 as Isildur walks away, you can see Me, Scott and Max(from right to left) sitting on the side.

During the weekend we also went out a 2nd time with Chris Ferguson, Liv Boeree, Robert Williamson the 3rd, Vanessa Selbst and Mike Matusow again. I didn't like the club as much as the one we were the other time, but it was still tons of fun and Chris got us a huge bottle of Crystal. It tasted better than normal champaigne, bit smoother and easier, but it's definitely not worth a few thousand or whatever it costs. I also talked a decent bit to another online player, whos real name I forgot, but I remembered his online names. Overall definitely a fun night and Chris rocks for paying for the booze and tables in the club!!!

Tuesday was the 5k HU event to kick off the EPT-London. I only had half my action, but it was quite a lot of fun to play. I hadn't played much live before at all, but I focussed and did quite well imo, especially considering I pretty much got the worst draw ever. First round I drew Scott Seiver, whom I thought was neither the best nor the worst(MTT guy), but then I heard he was Mastrblastr and I wasn't as happy. I lost the first round, but came back strong the 2nd and 3rd. Craziest hand was a hand where I 5bet him with air, cbet a paired board and c/folded turn. Afterwards he told me he had A4 and had flopped trips. It was best of 3 so my 2nd and 3rd win were enough to get me to the 3rd round.
Meanwhile Scott was playing Jason Mercier and lost. Harrison lost to Molswi and Daniel won from Hellpi or Huappi or some finnish dude. Right after I won my match Daniel told me we had to play next(told ya I had a sick draw).
Against Daniel again I lost the first match. Losing most of it in a standard deep 3b pot and the rest calling off with Js9x on AJ6ss8s7o against his tripple barrell. Which Scott told me afterwards was a snapcall. He showed me A8 though. The 2nd and 3rd match I came back pretty nicely. Most noteable hand was probably one where I 3bet 200BBs deep with AdAh and the flop came K96ss. I bet and got called. Turn came a Ts so I checked and Daniel checked back. River was an offsuit 4 and I decided to overbet 3.9k into about 2700. Daniel murmured something about I guess you could have pocket 4s and he called and mucked. 1 Other hand I limped the button with ~20-30 BBs and flop came Q32hh. Daniel ck/raised me and I floated 65cc. Turn was the 4h and because I saw Daniel looking at his cards I was pretty sure he was looking for a heart and thus bluffing(no flush, no 2p). Thus I flatted instead of jamming turn. The river came the Th and Daniel jammed, which he'd do with all his bluffs, problem is it's hard for him to have a bluff, so I eventually folded. Afterwards he told me he just had a pair of 4s, but I think I played it fine.
So after winning against Daniel, I didn't really have an easy opponent in the 3rd round either. I was up against Andrew Pantling(Clockwyze). This was probably the most interesting match of them all. He overbet lead a bunch straight away after I checked back flops. Just like in my first 2 rounds, I lost the 1st match, but won the 2nd. The 3rd one though I lost due to a pretty interesting hand. I had a slight chiplead early on and we were about 90-100BBs deep when I raised T7cc and got called. Flop came 872r with 1 club. I cbet and got ck/raised which Andrew had been doing quite a bit. First I just wanted to call, but then I realized how ridiculously bluffy a small 3bet looks and I figured that some1 like him would try to do something about it by rebluffing. So I 3bet, and pretty much immediately got 4bjammed on. Which I wasn't expecting. I thought he'd think for at least a bit. So I thought it over for a bit, but ended up sticking with my plan. I called and got shown 87 and didn't suckout. I'm fine with the way I played the hand and think overall I played very well in the tournament even though my draw sucked. Against Andrew I was a bit tired(~9 hours of live poker total), but still played pretty good. Overall it was a lot of fun. I do need to find Andrew online sometime thou
gh, because I'm interested to hear how much he thought I gave away playing live. He definitely seemed like he was very calm and experienced playing live.

Around this time we also went to an amazing japanese restaurant. What made this one special is that a lot of your food was cooked right in front of you. Which I had heard about, but I had never eaten in a japanese place where they did that. I had some amazing Sashimi. Obviously Tuna was unbeatable, but the octopus sashimi was seriously good too. It had a little bit of lemon flavour and was really special. The Yellowtail was great too. I didn't think the Seabass was as great though and the Salmon sashimi was a bit disappointing even. The salmon sushi roll though was probably the best sushi I've ever had. After that I had seafood + beef which tasted pretty awesome and I was happy with my choice untill I tasted a piece of Scott's duck which was a couple levels above my stuff. It tasted really really good. Maybe it was the teriyaki sauce, but it might've been the best meat I've ever tasted. The sake me and Joe drank was quite good aswell. Definitely the best restaurant I've eaten in in London and one of the best restaurants I've ever eaten aswell. In case you're in London, check out Matsuri, it's on Bury Street near the Green Park underground station.

After the 5k HU event at the EPT, Daniel and especially Scott spent quite some time playing the EPT Main Event, so I decided to do some stuff on my own. Because I liked movies I decided to check out London's BFI IMAX Theater at Waterloo. And I have to say, that's one helluva epic theater. I thought all IMAXes are pretty much the same, but this thing was probably twice the size as the one in Amsterdam. There could probably fit about 500 people in the theater and the screen is gigantic!! Simply enormous. They told us it was the biggest screen in brittain, but I'd have believed them too if they had said it was the biggest screen in the universe. I watched Inception for a 2nd time and loved it again. I also decided I liked the IMAX cinema so much I'd go again and check out some more movies there. I also got to watch The Wildest Dream which apparently is only shown in a few select locations in the US and the UK and nowhere else. It's sort of a documentary about an unconfirmed ascent of mount everest 30 years prior to the confirmed first ascent. It was pretty good, but not a movie you necessarilly need to go to IMAX for. The 3rd movie I got to see there though is definitely one you need to see in IMAX. It was Avatar. It was the 6th time I saw it in cinema, 2nd time I saw the extended edition and 4th time I saw it in IMAX, but I have to say it was (excluding 1st viewing) the best one of those 6. The bigger screen made it even more awesome and it had been a couple months since I last saw it in IMAX. I had never seen it before in such an awesome theater though.

Daniel got knocked out of the EPT Main early on the 2nd day, but Scott made it to the end of day 3. At that point I really thought that Chance Kornuth(chances cards) whom we had met earlier in the clubs was gonna take it down. Scott talked a bit with him and it seemed like he just had some sick live reads on people and was just destroying people left and right(5b shipping J5o fullring in late stages of EPT Main). On top of that he had a sick chiplead. Unfortunately enough, he didn't even make the final table, because he got unlucky in a big hand and then either made some bad live reads or tilted off the rest of his stack(I couldn't tell which one it was from the pokernews reportings).

The last few days we didn't do a whole ton of interesting stuff. Daniel played Isildur a bit online and played a durrrr challenge session, I did a bit of sightseeing and we went to dinner with some german poker players(Kidpoker, Insyderrr, Observer/Fisheye, depremiert and some1 whos online name I forgot). Seemed like a nice bunch of guys aswell. I also met Nick's girlfriend who seemed really cool and had recently climbed Kilimanjaro :| mad respect for that!!!

The last noteworthy thing was a multimedia store at Heathrow which had a whole rack with awesome foreign movies, including Oldboy and the other 2 movies from the vengeance trilogy, Amores Perros, City of god, Amelie, Internal Affairs and about 10 Studio Ghibli movies!!!! Brittain people really know what good movies are apparently. Also displayed by the ammount of cool movies on TV there. While I was there I saw that they showed a bunch of cool movies on TV including Juno, The Matrix and City of God. In general brittish TV seemed pretty cool. The Jeremy Kyle show was especially hilarious.

So now I'm back home. Not at my own place yet, but staying with my parents for a few more days before heading home. I'm really anxious to start playing a bunch of online HU poker again, because yeah the HU event was fun for a change, but this trip has definitely made me realize how insanely much more fun online HU poker is compared to all other forms of poker. It's just not even close. So I expect to be putting in a ton more volume again. Let's hope I'll get some action aswell.
I also can't wait to play Halo Reach. I got it the day I left so decided to just not open it and leave it untill I got back. I'll probably spend my entire sunday playing and hopefully finishing it. And last but not least I can't wait to get my new PC which I ordered just before I left to the UK. I'll hopefully get it in the 2nd half of October and it'll be a beast. It sets me back about 4.5k euros(most expensive thing I've bought like ever by a long shot), but It'll definitely be worth it(I use my PC a shitload) and I'll be able to watch blurays in 3D and play games in 3D, because I'm getting Nvidia 3D Vision and a 3D monitor aswell.

I think this blog is long enough now,
Frank.

P.S. Also at some point playin
g Clockwyze, he made a big riverbet(maybe overbet even) and then as I was tanking he proceeded to check his cards.... I mean wtf do you make of that? I hadn't completely made up my mind about what I was gonna do yet, although I was leaning towards folding, but when I saw him check his cards I just found it odd to check your cards when you're bluffing... so I folded.
