Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose

Hey guys, just finished watching the whole series of Friday Night Lights which ESPN Classic has been showing on Thursday nights for the last year or so. If you haven't seen this show, please check it out because in my humble opinion it is one of the top 5 or 10 shows of all time. My wife and I originally started watching this show on NBC because of the football element but even though it was in the title and there was at least some football action in just about every episode, it was actually the weakness of the show (realistic endings to football games was a struggle). The strength of the show was portaying ordinary life in a small Texas town which was heavily invested in high school football and a solid family structure (the Taylors are probably the best husband/wife duo in the history of tv). The show was actually good enough after season three to phase out most of the original high school characters and not miss a beat with a new batch that offered different compelling reasons to watch It is pretty amazing how much this show struggled in the ratings and I really can't convince any of my close friends to give it a shot, but I am currently watching Mad Men for the first time and Friday Night Lights blows it away in terms of interesting characters and plot development.

In poker news, I was in the middle of an 18bi downswing for three or four days, culminating in a Tuesday session where I ran 13 buy ins below ev and had a night session that was just a joke how terrible I ran in 800 hands. I decided to take a day off to get some non poker shit done, as well as making 2 videos for you guys that should be coming out towards the end of the month. I also watched a couple CR videos and it prepared me nicely I think for a very focused day of poker where I won 10bi. This weekend I will be devoting to watching the Masters, playing poker, and enjoying Easter with my family. GL at the tables and happy Easter everyone.

Heh I just finished this series as well. Excellent and agree with just about every you said. Madmen is good but not near as good at how well portrayed each character was.

Let me know if you find any other shows that have the same feeling, it definitely had me wanting more.

Whenever I read a blog/thread like this. Always gotta jump in and pimp out the one season of Freaks and Geeks. Only 22 episodes, but some of the best television ever made.

I love Friday Night Lights. The speech Eric Taylor gives at the end of the pilot is one of my favorite scenes in a television show ever. But I think when you\'ve just started watching Mad Men it\'s hard to compare the two. They\'re both character-driven shows. They both deal with adversity. But FNL is a show about human triumph in the face of tragedy. Even the most self-destructive character ends up on a paradisaical ranch. Mad Men on the other hand is bleak. The tragedies are often brought upon by poor decisions created by deep unhappiness and psychological shortcomings. I think Mad Men is just so exhaustive in really exploring human motivations, and the characters on that show are the most fully formed and deeply explored of any series I\'ve ever seen. I think they\'re both great shows with iconic moments, like Saracen in the tub or Don\'s Carousel pitch, both of which I\'ve rewatched countless times on youtube, but I do think I agree with Mad Men\'s philosophy a little more, as much as Eric Taylor makes me want to be a better man.

I think these quotes really capture the theme of each show

Friday Night Lights:

Hey, I love Friday Night Lights, and agree it's very smart, well written, and has good character development.

Comparing it to Mad Men though is like comparing a John Grisham novel to Faulkner.

Mad Men is way more in depth and subtle with it's genius. Don Draper is the most interesting, complex, and fascinating character in the history of television in my opinion. The coach in FNL, is comically one-sided compared to Draper and Walt from Breaking Bad for that matter.

Thanks for the comments guys, I definitely will need to revisit this blog when I get caught up through season 5. I will say though that just because Eric Taylor's view of the world stays consistent since the first time we meet him, and Don Draper's continues to change based on his ever whim, I do not believe this necessarily makes one more complex or revolutionary than the other. I am only through two seasons, but if I had to comment already I would say that while Don Draper's life certainly is compelling, I am a little lost at finding the complexities of his life. I believe he is an obviously scarred intelligent guy, who looks at the world as revolving around himself and will ultimately choose selfishly at any given opportunity. Although this is coming from a guy who prefers reading Grisham to Faulkner :)
