The first of 10,000

That's my bankroll as of right now. A nice even number inspired by Verneer's Mt.Micro postings over on 2+2 to start the year.

I've been playing off and on since college which mild success at my local live games, and no success online.

I've tried coaching for short periods in the past. I've also had burst of energy where I've done a ton of playing for a month or two, usually when I needed money. During these times, my results were much better then what has been the norm.

But too often, I let it fade. My interest in it was pushed aside at the first sign of success combined with the first push back from life requesting I put my time into something else.

After climbing up to the local 5-10 NL games or to 50NL online, I'd have some valid reason to step away. A job promotion, maraige, babies. All have been blessings, but all were used as reasons to stop playing. And upon my return, I would be kicked in the teeth and be forced to drop down in stakes.

Instead of doing so, I'd just leave poker alone, and start over again a few months later.

So instead of charting success by my current stakes, and feeling the need to quit if I ever have to step down, I'm going to change how I grade my success. My goal is to do something poker related, for 10,000.

As stated in the Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, that is the number of hours one must put into an activity before one becomes an expert at it. So instead of grading my success simply by counting how many buy-ins I'm up or what stakes I'm playing, I'll judge it based on hours of concentrated work.

20 hours per week, for 10 years.
