I think it's time to make the move to cash games. The tournament scene hasn't been going very well, largely in part because I break every bankroll management rule there is for MTT's - I'm good at them, and I know I'm good, but what I have to work with just gets destroyed by varience. I can handle the beats very well, but I just don't have the time nor the bankroll to put the volume in to be able cut down the varience. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to start from the dungeon of the cash games; I don't have hardly anything to work with, but I do have enough to have 20 buy-ins at the PENNY STAKES! Most of my studying has been for MTT's, so I don't really know the strategies needed for cash game - it'll probably be best to start out at the lowest levels and learn the different styles of play at those levels......so here we go.
$50 in my Stars account - at the .01/.02 NL level that's 10 buy-ins of $5 max for that level.....still under bankrolled, but that's about as good as I'm going to get right now. Started the project last night (9-3-08) 5 tabling the pennies, and found the basic strategies to work very nicely. I was grinding away, making a small profit at each table.
There were three key hands that I lost $2+ in the pot, two with A-A and another with 10-10. Two of them were against reraises which I know better at these stakes that's means MONSTERS. One time with A-A I couldn't get away from on the flop and fired out a turn bet, only to get minraised and had to dump it. I could've lost a lot more in that hand, but I was proud that I was able to get rid of it when I knew I was beat.
Didn't play for too long, lost $2.81 over 267 hands played - but I was happy that I didn't get discouraged at this level and was looking at the money as "BB's" and not "pennies". I have a long road ahead of me, but I think in the end this will help me play against all different kinds of "thinkers" and also have the smarts to get rid of hands when I know I'm beat.
I don't think I'm going to be able to get too much play in this weekend, but it'll be a good time to get in some "study time" to watch a few more videos and sharpen up this cash game play. If it wasn't for CardRunners, and I don't know if I would've ever found the right strategy to start out with - then form it around what I'm comfortable playing. More to come! (if anybody cares, haha)
