augie is a professional mid-stakes MTTer and plays stakes ranging from $10-1k freeze-outs and $3-50 rebuys. His first video series is a live action video from a $20 1r1a on PokerStars. He is from Illinois originally but currently lives in Las Vegas.
How did you get started in poker?
I started playing online because of the Moneymaker boom just like almost everyone else my age, but I've always been into gambling ever since I was a kid. My grandma taught me how to play 5 card draw when I was about 6 years old and by junior high I was renting "Caesars Palace" for my Super Nintendo. I'm really glad I discovered poker, because otherwise I might have turned into a degenerate gambler!
I like to play HU cash occasionally but not at any serious stakes. I have a pretty nice win-rate at 50NL heads up.
Why do you play mainly MTTs?
Right now there is a lot more dead money in tournaments than in cash games. It seems like newer recreational players prefer tournaments, and those who prefer cash games simply don't last very long due to the massive amount of grinders out there. Tournament variance is so high that a very weak player could win a couple of large field tournaments and that will keep them in action for a long time.
How would you describe your style?
My style defaults to tight/nitty play, but in general I'm just looking for good situations to put money in. I can play as loose as anyone if the situation is right.
I have a lot of patience, which is a very valuable asset in MTTs. I'm also very good at grinding long hours, which is essential to success in tournaments. To play the proper amount of volume you have to be able to stick it out all day.
How do you avoid tilt?
It just comes with experience. Most of the people who go on tilt from bad beats or losing just have unrealistic expectations. A lot of the time in poker, all of your winnings come in heaps, followed by very long and painful losing streaks. It seems like the ones who are always tilting are the ones who expect to win every time they play.
You're known by many in the MTT community from all your posts on 2+2 -- how did you get started on forums?
I got started on 2+2 through my friend Justin. I knew him through one of my other hobbies, and he was sending me money online, $50 at a time, in exchange for cash. He must have watched me play and noticed how bad I was because he suggested I check out 2+2. I'm very fortunate to have found it so early in my "career" because things might have turned out much differently for me.
You will definitely see me frequenting the CR forums as well, now that I am an instructor. I'll be in the MTT strategy forums, but I'm sure you will see me in the off topic forums too!
What makes you a good teacher?
I have not been doing poker coaching for very long, so I'm still crafting my teaching skills, but I rely on my poker knowledge and experience. I live with my girlfriend, a junior high math teacher, so maybe I will get some teaching tips from her. :)
What would you be doing if you weren't playing poker?
I have no idea. Poker has been basically my whole life for about 6 years, and none of my other hobbies pay very well. I would probably still be doing something unique; I've never been very interested in a traditional job path. My dad is self-employed and he always encouraged me to be my own boss as well.
What will CR members learn from your videos?
Hopefully they will be able to fix whatever leaks they have, whether its mismanaging their stack size, playing too many hands out of position, opening too many hands, etc...if I list every mistake people make in tournaments this answer would be far too long!
What else would you like CardRunners members to know about you?
I hope that everyone knows that I don't consider myself a perfect tourney player with all of the answers who makes the right play all of the time. I make mistakes just like everyone else, and I try to learn from them. I am open to discussion on every hand I play in a video, and I hope that the CR members will participate in that with me. Hopefully they will see my videos as a glimpse into the mind and the game of just one successful player, rather than an all-encompassing guide to playing MTTs.
What's your biggest poker accomplishment?
I think that my biggest accomplishment is to still be around. Grinding tournaments can be very grueling, especially if you don't run well at the beginning. I can't point to an individual tournament win as my biggest accomplishment because every time I win a tournament its merely the result of me running better than everyone else that particular time.
Do you watch TV/listen to music while playing?
I watch TV occasionally while I play, but I consider it a bad habit. It's very hard to pay attention to both at once. You usually end up paying 50% attention to the TV show, and 50% to your poker...so you don't get to enjoy either one!
I do encourage listening to music while you play. My tastes are pretty eclectic, but I almost always end up listening to at least one Red Hot Chili Peppers album during a session so that's a good starting point. But I also like gangster rap and a capella...so...whatever.
Favorite:
Restaurant?
Mint Indian Bistro in Las Vegas. Sage in the Aria hotel in Vegas is a close 2nd, but only because of one appetizer, the foie gras custard brulee.
Movie?
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
TV Show?
There are so many...The Daily Show is probably my most consistently watched, so we'll go with that one.
Book?
I'm not a voracious reader. I guess Blink by Malcolm Gladwell has been my favorite. If you do catch me reading, it will almost always be non-fiction.
Color?
Periwinkle
